What do you play?
I'm not aware of any official string ensembles, from my time as a cadet. Some bands did form in the Corps of Cadets. I always asked my Honduran roommate to "practice" his guitar… which would put me to sleep.

That's cool. You'll have to route a special to keep an instrument in your room. By route a special, I mean you'll have to file a special request form through your company for permission to keep it in your room. It's not a big deal, and it's nothing to worry about.
I didn't play anything as a cadet, but I started playing the five-string banjo last year. It's therapeutic. I think being able to harness some creativity during your cadet days will make the entire experience more enjoyable. It will be more enjoyable for your roommate too.

If you are so inclined, the Protestant worship has a band. During swab summer, it is made up of only swabs. DD#2 just reported for R-Day and took her banjo. She has never played in a church setting. The day before R-Day, they had those interested in playing in the band show up an hour early in order to practice (they notified everyone a week or so prior as to what songs they would be playing, and provided sheet music the morning of the service). They had less than an hour to practice, but sounded wonderful during the service. Also, the chaplains will store your instrument for you. During the school year, the band is larger and has many string instruments in it. My DD was just glad to have a place for her instrument, and also for the opportunity to play!

Yes! Nothing sounds as cool as a banjo. There are a few banjo players at CGA. There is one 2/c who is a phenomenal banjo, guitar, fiddle, you name it, player. He played in a bluegrass band growing up and he rocks!

Very very cool. I wish I had started earlier. I'm headed to Oak Hill, NY, for the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival. They're going to have a banjo summit with some of the very best five-string players ever. I'm really excited.

Sounds like a good time! I do think starting young is the key. DD started at six on a Gold Tone mini banjo with an awesome instructor who spent 15 years touring with Vince Gill.

Unfortunately there are no string groups at the academy. There might be the possibility of playing with some ensembles across the street at Connecticut College in their music department, depending on your schedule. It wouldn't be easy, but not impossible. Given the amount of things going on the first year, however, it'd be hard to do one's 4/c year. There are a number of good violinists at the academy, so you might be able to form an ensemble - again, depending on everyone's schedule.
