I got a letter today from west point admissions. and here is a short passage.

While high demand for the seminar prevents us from hosting you this year, your application was certainly impressive and we've confirmed you as a candidate for admissions. Congratulations! You can now take advantage of our many visit program and experience west point first-hand.

and then it gives me my candidate ID and password and other information.

So i know i got rejected, but i was wondering, doesnt all people who get rejected get this letter? Or is there a letter plain out rejected and no candidacy?
I dont really understand the letter

dont worry about it at all. I got flat out rejected for SLS a week after I submitted my app to it, and now Im an appointed member of the c/o 2013. My guess is that they reject candidates who they know have USMA as their top choice, and use SLS as a way to attract those on the fence.

mdsu,
I doubt they would have encouraged you to continue considering USMA if they didn't see you could be a viable candidate. Many current cadets were rejected for SLS (including my son) so all is not lost. Keep working on your grades, leadership, athletics, SAT/ACT scores, etc, and go for a visit if you can.

My guess is there are flat out rejections because they probably wouldn't take the time to sugar coat anyone they thought had no chance. Obviously not you. Good luck with getting in.

Sadly, and I feel like a jerk about this, but I got into the SLS... and I applied a few days ago. o_O

As for the person who posted this topic:

Although you were rejected, you're still a candidate.

wow, so does this mean they lied to all of us, the above, who got the standard "there is no more room"?

No, they did not lie to you - while I am not entirely certain how they do the SLS selections, it is my understanding that there are some geographic factors for SLS. So, while there may be room in SLS as a whole, perhaps from your general area they lack spots.

They didn't lie to you.
SLS is extremely competitive. They get 3000-4000 applications for 800 slots. Those 800 coveted slots are highly competitive based on ones academics, leadership in extra curricular activities and athletics. When they score your application they can tell right away where you will fall within the whole group. They can't host you because your application at this time didn't score high enough.
It is safe to say that all or nearly all of the 800 are very highly qualified applicants for admission to USMA and many will get LOA's if they follow through with their applications after SLS.
SLS is a marketing tool that is used to recruit scholars.

Many many candidates who get offers of appointments were rejected from summer seminar. I know the rejection stings and you perhaps feel "less worthy". If you really want to attend West Point do not let this deter you. If you were not qualified enough to be a candidate you would have received a different letter.

Follow through on your application. Continue to improve your file scholastically, athletically and extra curricularly. Take and re-take your SAT's and/or ACT's.
