ADD reporting?

Hello.

I filled out the first part of my DoDMERB yesterday, and it asked if I have ever had a learning disability. I was treated for ADD about a year ago, but according to my and my parents' research, ADD is not a learning disability. I don't want to report ADD if I don't have to, but I don't want to lie about it. Is there a section that should be filled out to report ADD?

Thanks!

Did you take medication for it? If so you would need report that in the medication section. Not sure about another section, been a few years since I have seen a DoDMERB form. Also, take a look in the DoDMERB section of this forum and look for some old ADD threads. It might help you down the road.

Heyriddle I don't disagree with you. Yet, the red flag was raised for me from the OP with one statement:
I was treated for ADD about a year ago

How?

Treatment to me says either an IEP at school or medication.

Read between the lines. How was he treated is the question that docs will ask for DoDMERB. Ritalin? IEP?

If you are truly diagnosed ADD than it will create a red flag. Either the school will create an IEP, no meds.. Red flag! Or you took meds another red flag. You must be off meds for X amount of time without your gpa taking a hit.

To me it comes down to one thing.

I took medication for less than a year. I decided that I didn't like it and it wasn't helping A) my performance in school and B) my chances of getting into a service academy, if I continued to take it.

You will have to state during the exam that you were prescribed XYZ meds long term, last script was 10/2014.

Again, let the chips fall where they may. I wouldn't be concerned so much of the ADD issue as much as the script that your doctor wrote back 9 months ago for your ADD.

You are glomming on the ADD aspect, and missing the prescription aspect. They care about both, and in SOME cases care more about the meds needed.

Thanks. My argument would be that I excelled in school without the meds this past year, and I took both the ACT and SAT without them.

This is meant with kindness.

DoDMERB will either Q or DQ you. Once DQs it is the commissioning source that makes the decision from a waiver aspect.

DoDMERB is just a medical clearing house. USNA or USMA or AFROTC docs decide from the waiver aspect.

If they say you cannot be on that med for 18 months, than you are DQ. The commissioning source now says we will waive that DQ.

I do not know your meds, but I would say as a poster, 9 months out will probably result at the very least a remedial for you.

Again....plow forward, and let them decide.

I agree with you on the medication aspect. As an educator, I read the "treatment" as medication and yes there are DQ issues as far as that is concerned.

I don't remember what the medical questionnaire looks like as DS did that on his own, but to me the ADD falls under the medication portion if a prescription was used but ADD is not a learning disability. Schools may use 504 plans for accommodations but that is different than an IEP. So if there is a learning disability portion on the questionnaire I wouldn't mark anything unless there is specific verbiage for for ADD.
