So this email came into my sons inbox today.
Has anyone done this?
We would need to fly from Washington State to attend, is it worth it?
We are planning on visiting the academy but were going to go this fall when classes are in session.
What are your thoughts, would this be better? We will not visit more than once, so we need to choose.
Thanks for any insight!

I don't know about this particular event. Academic classes start this Thursday at the academy. So if one of your hold backs was "classes in session", it's not an issue.

Classes are generally NOT in session on a Saturday unless there has been a snow day during the week.

I would skip it, but I'm cheap.

Check with an alo in your area as well as a moc office. They do similar academy town hall type get together so with the moc staff in every state. No reason to come to the academy to hear the same stuff you'll hear at a similar get together in your own state.

By classes in session, I assumed he meant the academic year had started. That is frequently what people say when they want to visit a college during the academic year. There is a better sense of what life will be like during the academic year, thus attending when academic classes are in session.

And you never know about a Saturday class. They have made up a missed day of classes on a Saturday if the academy had to cancel classes due to some event or other during the week. Rare, I know, but not out of the realm of possibilities. But in a Sept., I don't see that happening. Maybe in January. I just know that most cadets would prefer a delay than a cancellation with Saturday make up as the default.

Yes, nothing worse than a snow day during the week when there is a "free weekend" coming up, especially with fresh snow. :groupwave:

We would go a day early so we could see the campus on a Friday, if classes are in session.
If not we can just wait until this fall and go at a different time.
Are there any other good forums/events in August/September/October that would be good for a candidate to attend?

CC's advice was right on. Find out from your MOC's when they may be holding a forum in your area for students interested in a SA. These are very informative and put you in contact with staff members of your MOC that you need a nomination from (so you can ask questions, etc.). Normally, the congressmen/congresswomen are not there but their staff is.
As far as visiting campus, it seems to me it might be better to go a different time than when a crowd of hopefuls are on campus. It may give you a little more quality time to ask questions and get some one on one help/conversations/advice. I don't know this by experience, just saying it may be a good thought! Others could probably give you better suggestions on when the best time is to visit. Believe it or not, our DS's first time on the USAFA campus was the day before I-Day (which I would not suggest if it is possible for you to make a visit).

Is there a chance your child will be a diversity candidate (and remember, "diversity" doesn't mean the same thing to the SAs as it does to, say, State U, or your local LAC)? How about being recruited for a DI sport?

If so, you child may be eligible for a campus visit (paid for by USAFA).

F15Doc, agree with other posters to find a forum in your area and go in the fall as you planned. In the mean time you and he can learn a tremendous amount of information from the academy website. Also, if you DS is a junior this year, he can apply for the SS 2016 and if selected can stay at the AFA for six days or so and get a real feel for what life is like at the AFA. If he is a senior now, it's too late as it is for rising seniors.

Well maybe if it's the first snow of the year and you're the first shirt!
No more first shirting or hall brawls. They are no longer allowed. There was some disappointment among the cadets when this policy went into place.

Oh sorry I didn't hear that! I remember a few years back there were a couple of injuries but I didn't think it was stopped. Thanks for correcting me!

I remember a few years back there were a couple of injuries

It was the extent of the injuries that was the final straw which broke the traditional backs. I had heard about them and was hoping there would be fun anecdotes. Now I have to dig for stories. When ever we speak, I ask "anything fun or interesting to share?"

As a person more informed about USNA than USAFA, question... Agree town halls and local info sessions are great. If a candidate wants to tour USAFA (and is not a recruited athlete or diversity candidate) when is the best time to visit? This weekend appears to be made specifically for a candidate to tour and meet with admissions to ask questions, presentation, etc. At USNA they often give admissions briefs nearly daily and walking tours are always available. Does USAFA do something similar?CVWs at USNA are very helpful, but I don't believe USAFA does something like this? We often tell kids to tour the schools to get a feel for them, especially those really trying to decide among multiple SAs. I ask because I do field a lot of questions at community events, school days etc. I am probably least informed about USAFA. I thought it might also help the OP make some decisions about when is best to visit USAFA.

That is a good question NavyHoops and exactly the point of this thread. USCGA has a similar event by invite only which my son is going to attend, it's called, strangely enough "Cadet for a Day". Not sure we are going to have time to do both the USCGA and USNA programs as they are both on Fridays and I don't think I can spend over a week on this trip.... But we will be going on a completely separate trip to USAFA and we would like to attend whatever the best venue they offer.
Local venues are fine, but we ARE GOING to visit each campus, so we might as well make sure the trip gives us the best insight/exposure, right?

USAFA still does escorted tours according to the admissions website. They are conducted Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays, early September through mid-May. You sign up on line 14 days in advance of the requested tour.

When we did it years ago, it started with a group PowerPoint briefing in Arnold Hall from the admissions staff. After that, the kids were paired up with cadets and shadowed them throughout their day. The parents were taken on a guided tour of the campus to include the dorms and Mitch’s. We picked up our kids at the end of the academic day. We have boy/girl twins. Convinced my son that this was something he wanted to pursue (now a C1C) and convinced my daughter that this was too regimented for her.

His ALO made mention of this visit, a summer sports camp we flew him out for and Summer Seminar in his recommendation form I believe to show his level of interest and that he had some idea of what he was getting himself into.

Ya, they tried each year while I was there to ban first shirt, first snow....didn't stop people and cadets covered up the injuries as much as possible.

I distinctly remember being the Group Supe as a 2 dig. I was also considered the de facto first shirt since there wasn't a group first shirt.... so that first snow that came through resulted in a large gaggle of smacks from across the group storming the group hall and dragging me outside.... much fun was had and the brawl was epic with group staff vs. smacks. :) Good memories. And no broken bones. ;)

Just got another email from USAFA - Date was incorrect on their original email.
Now it has been changed one week later to August 29.
I don't see any way to edit my original post or the header, any suggestions?
