I am currently in my senior year and want to know what my chances look like for getting any of the three ROTC scholarships. Here is my portfolio

GPA: Weighted 3.81 Unweighted 3.51
Grades 9-11: 5 AP classes, 4 honors classes [only have college credit for AP US History]

100+ Volunteer Hours
Volunteer Coach
Paid Coach 2-5 hours a week
School Ambassador
4 years Varsity Tennis
4 time letter in Tennis
1 year Captain
All-League 2nd Team for Doubles
Also I can get very good recommendation letters from current and former military personnel.

Schools I want to attend/get the scholarship:
Army ROTC:
1. Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Prescott
2. Cal Poly Pomona
3. Embry Riddle Aeronautical University Daytona Beach
4. San Diego State University
5. Cal Poly San Luis Obispo
6. UC Irvine

Airforce ROTC:

I have similar stats to you, 1140 SAT 3 varsity sports, volunteer hours and so on...

I know AROTC will be more competitive than last year now that 4-year scholarships are reduced (or have even been removed, someone correct me if I'm wrong)

I received a 4 year AROTC scholarship to my 1,3,4 choice schools. My #1 school was the cheapest because I was a recruited athlete, and my 3,4 where very expensive ($40K+) a year.

AROTC wise you look good, I know this sounds silly because of my SAT score but try and get it up, it won't hurt taking it again.

AFROTC I'm not exactly brushed up on so I can't help here

But I will tell you I applied to the Naval Academy and received a nomination but not an appointment, and I was also not granted an NROTC marine option scholarship.

Good luck to you!

Thanks for replying really quick.
I was wondering how did you do on your interview? and how did you do on your PFT?

My PMS interview went really well. It was pretty relaxed and mostly the PMS trying to get to know me as a person. There was a few questions obviously such as why ROTC, why army and so on. Pretty easy questions if you have the motive.

My scholarship physical assessment I believe was 6:38 mile, 71 push ups, and 63 sit ups (it was a year ago so these prob arnt dead on but close)
For the test just give it everything you have. There is no min. Max on this PT assessment. Just give everything you have.

Wow. Was those pushups and situps in 1 min. or 2 mins?

Did you apply for the NROTC scholarship?
And do you happen to remember which schools you wanted and got the scholarship for?

Yes I did apply for the NROTC, but I applied for the NROTC marine option, I did not receive that scholarship though

As for my AROTC scholarship my 1st choice was Oswego Stare 3nd was Syracuse University and 4th was Niagara University
My second was VMI and 5th Ohio State

I think your SAT is a little bit on the low side for all three service branches but particularly for Navy and Air Force. Re-take the test as often as time and finances will allow. Have you taken the ACT? Some do better on that. The rest of your application is pretty much unchangeable at this point. So if you want to improve your chances the SAT/ACT is the way to go. Remember there are ways beyond the scholarship to commission. One tip you'll see on these pages over and over again is to choose a college that you can afford without the scholarship, that way you won't have to transfer if you don't receive one.

I agree it is low for at least AFROTC.

AFROTC does best sitting. It does not superscore. The avg for a Type 7 is 1280.

AFROTC does not tie the scholarship to the school like A/NROTC does. They don't care if you go University of Timbucktoo or Cal Poly Pomona, as long as they accept the AFROTC scholarship.

Additionally, broken record now, if you can't afford to attend without the scholarship re-think matriculating even if you get a scholarship. Not everyone will commission.

This is good advice, but if applied to the SA's no one would apply. Just a thought.

AFROTC is unique. It is really not a 4 year scholarship, it is 2+2. The board for SFT selection does not take into account that you are on scholarship. Hence, if the scholarship matters regarding attending than this should be addressed. SAs are different. There really is no more boards that they meet to remain at the SA, unless you are talking about academics or ethics.
~ HQ AFROTC can and has disenrolled AFROTC scholarship cadets at the 2 year marker due to selection rate for SFT.

Both can leave free and clear before the start of their 2nd year.

I get your point, especially since many think of an SA education as free. Just saying, that for AFROTC scholarship there is no guarantee. They didn't choose to walk away. HQ AFROTC made them walk away.

Last year the selection rate for non-tech, non-rated cadets was 17% selection. Overall was @58%. If you are an AFROTC Econ major that is not going rated, but on scholarship, than you have a big wake up call if you are attending private or OOS. Can you afford to make up that 18K difference for tuition? It is not the payback. It is being able to afford to stay.

Just saying ROTC for the AF is very different than USAFA when it comes to commissioning. It is very different than A/NROTC also. Get an A/NROTC scholarship and it is like an SA....4 years if you keep yourself within their parameters. There will be no more selection boards.

Well, you're well above the minimum scores, here are the averages for AFROTC HSSP: https://www.afrotc.com/scholarships/eligibility

Just know for AFROTC you will be evaluated on the whole person concept. I think your chances are pretty good if you want to major in a technical field like engineering. DS does AFROTC at ERAU DB, it's a very large detachment. They also have pretty large NROTC/AROTC. ERAU is pretty generous with scholarship money, I could see you easily being awarded $15 a year by the school. Although you should apply ASAP. I mean it. They have rolling admissions so the sooner the better. DS applied early and was awarded a substantial amount.

Thanks for the reply.
I really do not have any preference of where I go and to what branch but reading more and more forums has made me feel a little down because some people are just a lot more competitive that I think I am. What I'm ultimately trying to ask is do you think I have a competitive chance at any of the scholarship? WHETHER ITS A FULL OR PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIP?

You are correct that he is above the minimum scores, but if you look at the avg SAT scores for cadets awarded scholarships, than he is off by @ 90 points (best sitting) for a type 7. He is at least 110-120 points off for type 1 and 2. The thing with a type 7 is that it is maxxed at the IS tuition rate, thus if ERAU charges more than IS tuition, they will need to convert the type 7 to a 3 year type 2. This means that they will get no scholarship as a freshmen. If he lives in California than he can use the type 7 since he will be IS.

They indeed use the whole concept, but I would also state the problem with saying things like my wcgpa is 3.81 is that nobody knows what they use for weighting. Is it out of 4.5, 5.0, 6.0? Nor do we know what their grade scale is for their HS...a 10 point or a 7 point. They will request a school profile as part of the transcript. That will include information like the weight and point scale. It will also include class rank. They will use their own algorithm using this information to rejig your cgpa. They do this because there are @2000 HS in the nation. His 3.81 might actually drop to 3.65 or it might go up to 3.9 for their algorithm. The biggest chunk of the whole person concept is indeed the prior academic record (PAR) for AFROTC.

I am just saying that with the limited information we know, I only feel comfortable saying you have 0% chance of receiving a scholarship if you don't apply. That the candidate needs to understand there are bigger variables that are unknown to any of us. Nobody here knows how many scholarships are available this year, and we don't know how many candidates will be in the pool. If it stays at the historic rate from the past years, than you have @16-18% chance of getting one. Remember for ROTC scholarships it starts and ends from a national selection perspective. Unlike SAs, they do not care where you reside.

Additionally, the majority of the SA candidates will apply for a scholarship as plan B. Yet, most ROTC candidates will not apply to an SA as their plan B. ROTC boards do not talk to the SAs boards, at least they don't for the AF. That means you can see candidates here get an appointment, but no scholarship; or a scholarship, but no appointment. Hence, we are now full circle...you have 0% chance if you don't apply and why, old posters like me do not like chancing anyone since we take into account the little things that can matter.

If we all said yes you look like you will get a scholarship, you will walk away feeling joy, but come a few months from now when this forum lights up like a Xmas tree with I got the scholarship, and your portal doesn't change than what good did we do?

FWIW, another way AFROTC is different is the only thing they will look at after the end of your junior year is updated SAT and ACT from the PAR aspect. Your course curriculum or ECs will not be taken into account. So, if you are stating 1 yr Captain, but that won't occur until your senior year, it would not count. Just like the 4 years of tennis. THIS IS FOR AFROTC ONLY.

WHETHER ITS A FULL OR PARTIAL SCHOLARSHIP?

ROTC scholarships are considered partial no matter what from that perspective. AFROTC will only pay tuition and some fees. A/NROTC allow you to choose between tuition or room and board, not both. Hence, it is never full ride. Most candidates that get a scholarship will also get merit too. Some schools are more generous than others and can have their own fine print.
~ IE 10K, but can only be used towards tuition, that would make the A/NROTC candidate re-think if they use it towards tuition or the tax implications for using it towards R & B.
