I am applying to VMI as a backup to the SA's and would love to end up there. I am a senior and my GPA is about a 4.16 weighted and a 3.65 unweighted. I recieved a score of 1860 on the SAT, Math-540, Reading-710, Writing-610. I am planning on taking it one more time in October. I am at least 20th ( may have moved up, noy sure) out of 212 in my class. I also have plenty of sports such as: Track 1 year (plus this year and will letter), Cross Country (letter) 1 year, football 2 years (co-captain), will be wrestling in my senior year (should letter), and recreational/travel soccer for 4 years (co-captain). I also have plenty of other EC's such as: clubs- VA DECA Club 2 years, Beta Club 3 years (and will be treasurer senior year), Spanish Club 1 year, Trojan Club (Varsity athlete club) 1 year, and an SCA rep for 2 years. I am also attending a selective leadership program held by my local Chamber of Commerce. Almost every class I have taken throughout high school has been either advanced (not AP) or dual enrollment college credit. I also attend an engineering program called the Piedmont Academy of Engineering and Technology for morning classes every school day (for junior and senior year) that is similar to a Governor's School program. I take college english, math, and engineering classes there. With this program I completed a 2 week program called Industry Fundamentals which focused on team building excercises and also allowed me to tour several multi-national company facilities such as FedEx Air and Volvo. This summer I completed a 4 week engineering internship with a multi-national transformer company called ABB Inc. I also work about 20 hours a week at Chick-Fil-A. I am also a licensed U.S. Soccer referee and work as a ref for a soccer club. I also volutnteer as a youth coach for this club. I am proficient in two 3D modeling engineering MATHCAD Softwares: SOLIDWORKS and APT Creo. I also did Cub/Boy scouts in grade school, but not past about the 6th grade or so. The only flaws I may have are a speeding ticket and I have gotten In school suspension (which is for very minor offenses at my school) twice. Once for horseplay on a bus and another for driving to the engineering academy when unauthorized to do so (because I missed the bus). One other thing that I may add that (I am not sure if it makes a difference) is that I go to a nationaly recognized high school that is ranked in the top 2,000 high schools in the country. I am also running for class officer (not sure which position yet) and am planning on joining one more club. I could possibly also be elected to an officer position in Spanish Club. One other thing that I think helps is that I live in VA.

I know that no one on here can give me a definitive answer, but I also realize that there are many very intelligent people on this forum who can tell me what they think. Also, I would appreciate it greatly if those of you who were recently accepted, wait listed, or denied to VMI to share some stats and credentials if you do not mind.

From the Collegedata.com website: Math: 530/630 is the range of the middle 50% of enrolled freshmen. 520-620 is the range of the middle 50% of enrolled freshmen for critical reading. Average GPA is 3.61. 490-590 is the range of the middle 50% of enrolled freshmen. 48% of enrolled freshen are in the top quarter of their high school class. Do the overnight, see if it is the place for you. The staff at VMI is very approachable, go to the website, find the individual in the admissions staff assigned to people with your last name (they may have changed it but they used to assign Person "A" to candidates with last names of "A to D", etc.) and talk to them. Fill out the application. You should do fine.

Your record looks strong. Apply for the 4 year ROTC scholarships as well. Getting one is about as tough as getting a SA appointment. Shows you are serious on becoming an officer as opposed to just a SA graduate. Unless you get the principal nom from one of your Senators or your Congressman, you will find you are competing across the country for 1 of about 500 NWL slots (not 1 of 1200 slots) at each of the SAs you have applied to and they don't just select the top records in rank order to fill those remaining slots. Everyone they select is "qualified" and meets some minimum standard, but they will choose from the NWL pool who they need to make their entry numbers meet their goals to reflect the make up of the country and the make up of the military from a demographic and geographical perspective. Some kids qualify for both SA appointments and ROTC scholarships, but those kids typically have higher SAT composite scores than yours -- greater than 2000. Every year there are kids that are selected by SAs, but don't qualify for a ROTC scholarship. And every year there kids that receive 4 year ROTC scholarships, but aren't selected by the SAs. Has to do with a lot of factors. You may also run into a "snag" with DoDMERB requiring a medical waiver and you may find a particular Service ROTC more willing to grant a waiver than a SA. You are thinking about this the right way. A SMC like VMI with a 4 year ROTC scholarship is a great back-up to a SA.

Taymcg12,
VMI is also a great alternative to a SA because you may qualify for alumni scholarships or regional scholarships exclusive to the institute. It is surprising how much scholarship money VMI has when you start asking the right questions--talk to Col Golden and the folks at Financial Aid for more info. I would also add that you'll meet folks at VMI who were accepted at SAs but chose to attend VMI for various reasons...
