I am beyond excited to say that I have gotten word today that my LOA for the Class of 2020 will be coming in the mail later this week. I want to thank everyone on this forum for the tremendous support you've provided over these past few months. The people here have somehow made the application process a lot less stressful, and I can't thank you enough. While I'm not sure if USAFA is where I'm going to go, there's a very VERY good chance I could be calling myself a Falcon next year. Thank you again everyone and if anyone has ANY questions please feel free to comment or PM me:)

Congrats! And when you decide bubble wrap!!! But still have fun. And one last word of advise take the rose colored glasses off now. There are good thing and bad things at the AFA it's what you make of it. If you think things suck guess what they will! And that pretty much goes for any place you go.

Take full advantage of everything the academy has to offer and you'll have a great time. Once again CONGRATS!

Congratulations! Don't forget there is still work to do! Continue working on those nominations!!!

Thank you all for your kind words:) also if anyone has a cadet or is a cadet at Air Force, I would like to speak to them about Academy life:) I've read so much and I'm flying out there soon, but there's no such thing as to much learning. If you feel comfortable giving me your contact info (or your cadets) please PM me. Thanks again everyone, still on Cloud 9:)

One question...Is your application complete or are a few things still missing?

I would assume he/she still needs a NOM. The majority of those are issued toward the end of the year, we are only in September. LOA's may also include statements about other requirements, such as successful DODMERB. I would hold off the real celebration until all of those things have occurred.

Excuse me, I have everything done. My application is done, I'm qualified for my DoDMERB, and my nomination application is in. So I think I deserve a "real" celebration. Of course an appointment will be a bigger celebration, but getting an LOA clears huge hurdles in my book.

Hopefully you realize that everyone who 'applies' for a NOM doesn't get one. Good you have an LOA, but you do need to receive a NOM to get the appointment.

I was under the impression that The Academies didn't send LOAs to people they weren't confident would get nominations. Thank you for correcting me!

There have been posters, rare, but still occurred that they did not get a nomination. It is rare. You just need to stay on target. Don't take anything for granted. LOA candidates typically do get a nomination, because there is a loophole for the MOCs. The MOCs can actually give a principal to someone else, while placing you on the slate. The principal will get charged to the MOC. You with an LOA and a nomination, will also get an appointment. However, that does not mean you will be charged to the MOC as your source.

I would definetly send a copy of your LOA letter to the MOC with your nomination package.

For me, I have to say this one statement struck a chord.
While I'm not sure if USAFA is where I'm going to go

Please take this time now to do some soul searching. Look, I get it you are excited, but this is not just 4 years of your life, this could be 10-15 years. (4 at USAFA, and at least 5 for ADAF, Pilot and a lot longer).

Just saying don't get wrapped up in the bells and whistles. Look hard during the visit. Ask them the hard questions.
1. What was it like to endure BCT with no contact, but letters from an emotional aspect?
2. What was it like until R-Day?
3. How many do you know that got my 1st choice? (Grad school, pilot, Cyber, etc)

I wish you the very very best that I can offer. Congrats. Float on the clouds for today, but tomorrow, put your nose back to the grindstone.
~ Complete plan B schools
~ Complete the ROTC scholarships.

Why? Because if you are athletic, than you risk getting injured. Having that plan B school and ROTC scholarship in hand can help. Here are some of the stories I remember from posters here.
1. Skier/snowboarder injured in end of March. Broken bone. DQd for I Day
2. Baseball player broken arm, last game of the season in May. DQd for I Day
~ Both were able to now use the ROTC scholarship and eventually went to an SA a year later.
3. Tripped off the bus on IDay, twisted their knee. Sent back home that day as a medical turnback
~ Folks paid the college deposit, and was able to do ROTC.
4. Got very sick (was an LOA, athletic recruit). Sent home because they were going to miss more than 8 days of BCT.

Again congrats.

First off congrats. An LOA is a huge accomplishment. Pima is spot on why you don't let up. An LOA is a great start but it is not an appointment... Yet. Don't slack on your noms, grades or anything else. Every year there are the 1 or kids who had LOAs but didn't get a nom. I am sure you don't want to be that guy/gal. Pima brings up great points about the odd scenarios in which candidates didn't make it to I Day swearing in or the academic year and that is why it is so important to keep pushing and lining up other options. She also brings up great points about really thinking if USAFA is the place for you. Good luck.
