LOA Question

My DS has a complete package, (MED, CFA, ETC) to include a Presidential NOM. I assume that even with a great package, he would never see a LOA? Is that correct? How soon could offers of appointment go out?

I have a Presidential NOM and all items complete except for the medical. During CVW, I was told during meetings with Dean Latta and the Superintendent that I would receive an appointment upon completion of the medical. I haven't received an actual LOA, but I think this is as close as you can get to an LOA if you already have a Presidential NOM. He said that an early offer of appointment would be made later in the fall / early winter. I realize this isn't the same situation as your DS, as I still need to complete DODMERB, but it is similar. I hope this helps. #GONAVY

A Presidential nomination doesn't guarantee an appointment. There are hundreds that are eligible for it, but only 100 that are slated to the academy. Until you receive an LOA (rare) or an appointment (which could be in the Spring), keep working on and improving your grades, ACT/SAT scores, leadership opportunities and sports -- ie your WCS.

I was not trying to say that I have a guaranteed appointment because of the Presidential NOM. I had meetings with Dean Latta and VADM Carter and they told me that I would be offered an appointment. The Dean said that they do not offer LOA's to people with Presidential NOMs, so I would receive an early appointment when I complete my medical.

My son also had a Presidential nom. He also received an LOA in early October. Not sure why a Presidential nom would exclude a candidate from receiving an LOA?
They give out hundreds of Presidential noms-as above poster said, they are automatic if you meet the criteria, but can only charge 100 admitted candidates with that nomination.
Not clear about your specific situation but if you had "meetings" with the Superintendent and the Dean of Admissions guaranteeing your appointment, then it sounds like you are in an excellent position. It bears mentioning for others reading this thread, Presidential nom or not, continue to seek all possible nominations.

Sounds like you are getting an appt. The folks you spoke to obviously know the difference. You have a nom and are 3Q then they can appoint you. They could send an LOA while the presidential nom catches up. They are also correct that usually around 800 or so qualify for presidential nom, but only 100 appointments can come from this. Has your portal updated? What lots of folks are saying is trust but verify. so trust what they said but press the I Believe button when your portal updates or letter is in hand. Also until you receive the official appointment make sure to continue with your nom packages as you can see the numbers game when it comes to Presidential.

hthp37,
I'm not sure having a Presidential NOM excludes them from an LOA. I think the admissions office just usually offers early appointments rather than LOAs to people with Presidential NOMS if they have their entire application finished and they are competitive enough.
NavyHoops,
I agree, I am continuing with updating my application and nominations because I don't have the letter of appointment yet.

It is possible for a candidate to receive an appointment very early. In this instance, all parts of the application are complete, a nomination is obtained and the candidate would otherwise be an "LOA" candidate...but because all parts were completed and considered qualified, there would be no reason to offer an LOA, but to offer an appointment.

If the Dean and Superintendent told you, in a private meeting, that they will offer you an appointment upon successful completion of the DODMERB....then sounds like you are golden.

If you don't mind, can you provide the context of the meetings? I am surprised that the Dean/Supe would meet with a candidate during the CVW.

When I was checking in on Thursday, my name, along with 3 others, was highlighted on the check-in list and I was told by a LT in the admissions office to wait in a room. Then the Dean came in a few minutes later, talked with me about my application and gave me the good news soon thereafter. On Thursday, my Plebe received an email that he had to drop me off at the Supe's office Friday morning for a meeting. 3 other candidates and I talked with the Supe for 10-20 minutes about ourselves, USNA, and the Navy. Then we left and continued with CVW like normal.

LG it happens at some CVWs. Mostly it's dependent on the schedules of the Dean and Supt. This was the first CVW of the year and they probably were able to work the schedule especially because it was a home football weekend and neither were on the road. Congrats to those who got LOAs. Celebrate, but don't let up, keep pushing for that nom. Remember every year there a few kids with LOAs who don't get Noms. I know no one wants to be that guy, so don't assume anyone is going to find you a Nom and take the process seriously. The process is great prep for future interviews even while at USNA, other college interviews and even down the road in the fleet. Keep working on Plan B and C. If you have questions about USNA, ask, we are more than happy to help. Make sure this is the right place for you to succeed and what awaits at graduation.
