Hello, I am a junior from a small town in Arkansas. I am interested in attending USAFA. Just out of pure curiosity I was curious as to what I have to score to be eligible for an appointment or to even be considered. I have done some prior research and the average score seems to be around 28 and higher. I was just curious if there were any cadets who were able to get in with a score lower than a 28?? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
 
Yes. "Average" means half the scores are above that and half are below.

1)The higher ,the better

2)The USAFA Prep School scores are ''lower'' than the direct appointment:

<ACT (English: 24; Read:25; Math: 25, Science Reasoning: 25)>

3)Try to take the ACT as much as you can(they will take the best combination of all your scores and use them in your file)

4) Try to get perfect 36 scores(it will increase your chances to be accepted)

5)Notes:
1.You also must take the ACT writing test
2.The ACT is easier than the SAT(in my opinion)
3.If you also take the SAT, they won't combine ACT and SAT scores

First of all, the average ACT scores are a 30. And as has been mentioned, average means there are lower and there are higher. To minimum to be considered, is above 25. But let's be totally honest here..... Unless the rest of your application kicks butt, a 26-27 probably won't get you an appointment. Minimum standards shouldn't even be posted, being the average appointee exceeds the minimum considerably.

All you can do, is your best. And only you k ow what your best is. Don't worry what scores you need, or what gpa you need, etc. your best is your best. If you honestly give it your best, and a 27 is all you can get, then that's your best. Make up for it with a 3.9-4.0 gpa, playing 2-3 varsity sports, be the captain of those sports, be in clubs and be a leader in those clubs, have 200-300 hrs of volunteer time, etc. all you can do, is your best.

Of course... Extracurricular activities are important.

Try to join the science club, student government, Civil Air Patrol, AF Junior ROTC, sports(tennis,martial arts, swimming etc), community service(some homeless or orphanage volunteer project).

There's some Young Eagles unit in your state?<In this program, you can earn a private pilot's license scholarship>.

Talk about your application with your teachers (they can help you with the letters of recommendation required)

You also need a nomination(presidential, vice-presidential or congressional)

I have no idea what you're talking about. She mentioned act scores of less than 28. And I don't think I referred to gender at all. So maybe it's been a long day at work for me, but what's your point?

I'm not trying to let you confused. I'm just saying that she can overcome herself and disappoints who underestimate her intellectual potential.
 
As one of you mentioned; considering the prep school. From what I gather, the USAFA Prep School is basically for cadets who are going to pursue their athletic career. I don't see many students go there just because they're not where they need to be academically. If I'm wrong please correct me, but from my understanding the Prep School is basically for the athletes

Not really.

1)As far as I know, the air force don't sponsors civilian athletes.

2)USAFA Prep School lasts about 10 months( divided into quarters ). Once the candidates complete this program(less stressful environment) they will attend the academy (4 years= bachelor of science degree+ commissioning as an active duty 2nd lieutenant with a service commitment of 5 years).
<If not selected for an Academy appointment, they are discharged from the Air Force>.

3) When they mentioned ''athletics'' it's more about sports and physical fitness than other thing

OK, look up the prep school if this interests you, but note: you do not apply to the prep school, you are offered it. Huge difference. And it is NOT (for about the 3000th time) JUST FOR ATHLETES. (I may have to lay off the coffee) If you don't understand what the prep school is all about, read about it here before you suggest it is just for athletes.

Go41, dear dear dear... I sincerely doubt you could ever confuse our ChristCorp about this or pretty much anything. In fact, if you're a betting individual (how old are you again?)... In short, ChristCorp knows, you do not, so close mouth (figuratively) and open ears (figuratively).

I am not following your first point. The majority of athletes, even if recruited are civilian until they take the oath. They do indeed recruit "civilian" athletes. Fencers DS was recruited for fencing, another posters DD was recruited for swimming.
~ Granted they went direct admit, but there are some that will go Prep.
~~ The debate about if prep school is a red shirt factory occurs every every year.

I do agree with her, Mike is the go to poster for info on many subjects. He served for decades (retired), is an ALO, and has a child that not only commissioned in 12, but got the OMG RAND fellowship. IOWS, he fills a lot of the squares!
 
I forgot to say, do not look at the Prep school as a low ACT/SAT only aspect.

I have always been under the impression that it exists because the candidate needs a stronger academic foundation, but never due to a lack of sports or ECs aspect.
