When Navy Football wins, what privileges do plebes get?

It depends. Sometimes they get overnights. Other times extended liberty or Sunday liberty. It really depends on the administration. Heck when I was there we never got weekends unless we Beat Army. Seems like the admin the last 5-10 years has been much more open to weekends, which is great for the Mids!

It all depends what the Dant gives. Lately I believe they have been getting them.

We received a weekend for the win over Colgate and today's win over ECU, which entails an overnight.

Rumor on the street (and it is just that --- rumor, not factual) that the Dant wants to tighten some things in the brigade. Apparently the previous Dants "relaxed" some standards...so will be interesting to see what changes are made and if it rolls over to football liberty (i.e. not a overnight/weekend after every game).

I was surprised to hear at recent BGO training that there were very few mandatory meals, compared to my first class year when every meal was required except from Fri night to Sun lunch. It sounded like things might go back in that direction.

This just goes to show you how things change at USNA drastically between administrations.

08, it's definitely interesting to hear the different things. I lived near USNA for nearly 10 years and was around Mids a lot. Same for us on meals, they were all nearly mandatory and very few are now. A lot of them at night and weekends even go in Blue Over khaki or Blue and Golds. Well Blue over khaki didn't exist. I think it's a good change for certain places it's appropriate attire. The one thing I did notice is we had more liberty as an upperclass than they do now, but we had a lot less weekends. As a Firstie we had Libo nearly every night but one. I rarely went out as I had basketball and school, but I always sort of like that. Let's you know the maturity level of those about to commission if they can handle freedom and assess decision making ability. The 3/C and 4/C get more weekends than we ever had during those years. Some firsties I talked to had fridges in their room, that would of been nice as a Mid. A good change in my mind. A weekend after a win would of been simply amazing as a Plebe! Heck they have had 2 before their first 6 week exams, could you have imagined that 08? So far they have gotten them, be curious to see if it stays.

My plebe year was '89-'90. We got one overnight all year, and that was contingent on being academically, physically and militarily SAT. I don't recall the consequences of specific games that fall other than Beat Army, but I think Navy won 3 or 4. When Navy beat Army, so we got carry-on for the few days before winter leave - that was glorious. I also remember losing a "mandatory fun" bet with a 2nd-classman in my company (who kind of had it in for me) and "losing my a$$" for six days. Overnights? Sunday libo? Inconceivable for this plebe!

I am curious to know, plebes don't have cars and civilian clothes, so for an overnight liberty, where would they go/stay? Plebes from the nearby area I assume can go home, etc, but what about the others? Sponsor parents? Doesn't seem overnights would be that much fun given the limitations.

We brought 4 home after the game. They headed downstairs immediately to ditch uniforms and change into the collection of left-behind blue rim USNA tees and shorts from sponsor generations past. Stampede upstairs where the chips and salsa are out on the counter. Phones brought out for mandatory social media work. Deploy to the big sofa, put a movie on ("Transporter 3"). Inhale chips and salsa, then start on 7-qt slow cooker steak chili, cheddar-Ortega chile cornbread and veg sticks with ranch dressing. Multiple refills. One gallon of milk gone and two gallons of raspberry iced tea. Three containers of Turkey Hill ice cream ravaged. Settle down on sofa with 3 boxer dogs to watch movie with phones in hand. All asleep within 15 minutes. Wake up around midnight, drink more milk, stagger off to bed downstairs in the "mid wing."
It's 11:20 AM. Haven't seen one of them yet.
The "fun" comes from not being in Bancroft or on the Yard, with waking up between cool sheets in a quiet house and a nice long shower to look forward to.
Naval Bagels bagels await, with anything they could want to put on them. There is a big bowl of strawberries and cantaloupe. The gallon OJ containers have been brought in from the garage refrigerator. At noon, they know the boxers are allowed downstairs to wake them in exuberant style, which they wait for, because they miss their dogs at home. Our boxers dive right in for a cuddle - and joyously remember each grad at the door years later.
For plebes, this is fun.
For upper class, we are the default setting if they don't have plans with friends, need some quiet time or need to get work done.
And it's fun for us too.

MD403 and Capt MJ, and sponsor parents: thank you for all you do. Gives comfort to those of us parents far from USNA that our plebes/mids have a welcoming place to go.

Our pleasure. We don't look at it is "entertaining," but welcoming the newest members of the almost-officer community into our home, as more senior officers did for us when we were junior officers far from home.
My husband and I have 52 years at sea and ashore between us, and five commands, with one of us a grad and one of us who was a BattO. We are a good sounding board for mid gripes. We are in no way their parents - that job is taken - but we are good mentors and support if needed. And offer free racks and good chow.

Launching the boxers in 3...2...1...

Is an overnight the same as a weekend?

If they don't take an overnight and save it for a time when their family comes out does that mean they will have both Saturday and Sunday?

Our mid banked his weekend for when we come with his grandparents AirForce weekend! (just in case) We were there for the Colgate game and that was a fun weekend too! Much more relaxed versus PPW!

Yes, an overnight is the same as a weekend. If you take a weekend, it means you get Saturday overnight and have to return Sunday by 1800. If it's a three day weekend (in most companies) you get Sunday night too and have to be back on Monday by 1800. You can bank your weekend and use it any other time.

Some weekends are 'bankable' as in you can use it later. For others you can only use it that weekend. Really depends on the administration. Glad to see they are allowing them to be used later. It's nice to save them for when company is in town or a long weekend and head home.

As a Plebe fun has a new definition. Being able to nap, lounge in a couch, eat and watch movies is nice to just unwind. Some Plebes will share a hotel room to just get away for a day and away from the hall. Many go to their sponsors and relax.

Yes, I heard the same at a recent Congressional Academy Day. Seems that things have definitely gotten a bit more lax than the usual "back in my day we had it rough!" I remember the Dant as a 2nd Class, he was one of the tough ones so am glad that he is coming in making some changes. I don't remember getting an overnight as a plebe until Thanksgiving!!!
