My son attended SLS 2008. We have service with US Cellular; he had a hard time finding a spot with enough signal to place a call. Any advice on companies with stronger reception at USMA? He has accepted his appointment to the class of 2013.

Your son will have a phone in his room. When my son calls home, he uses this, as there is the least chance of dropped calls. His cell service is with verizon, and he has had no complaints about lack of service.

My Cadet has AT&T and doesn't have a problem.

Occassionally inside the buildings some cadets have trouble - it isn't so much the service but the structure of the buildings.
As mom3boys said - they all have landlines with *free* long distance.

well that is good..., I did also just check AT&T's coverage map, and it seems the 3G coverage area is pretty much all over West Point..., he doesn't need to be talking on the phone inside the building anyway  landline would be just fine by me. But it is good to know that the phone would work in case of emergency (outside, not near a landline). Yeah when we were up there for the day visit, I did see a couple cadets talking on their phones Outside the buildings on the steps. 3 1/2 more months... anticipation is starting to wear at the nerves...

We have Alltel and I have to agree with JAM. Last semester son's ability to use his cell phone in room (deep inside the barracks) was spotty. This semester (deeper still) not at all. However, from a friend's room, which is front facing, he has no problem at all. It really does depend on the location. He uses his land line.

he'll probably have to sit right up next to the windows in the barracks. but usually the cadre told us to go outside and call our mommies and daddies at night.

What are the rules to using cell phones while attending the SAs?

It depends on the service academy.

For USMA - no cell phones during beast. The phone calls during beast are made from cadre's or sponsor's phones. If Mom and Dad are coming to A-Day they can bring your cell then - that way it won't get *lost*.
During the year they can use them freely in their rooms.

Here is a tip

At a parents club meeting today someone suggested getting a bluetooth device to wear in the room and the cell phone can sit next to the window for better reception. Question: How do the cadets communicate? IM, facebook, email?

We have an AT&T family plan. My son doesn't use his cell phone in the barracks because it tends to drop the calls. If he is outside he has no problems with it. When I have visited I have not had any problems with my service on post or in surrounding areas.

I have heard that some cadets have a bluetooth so they can use their cell phone in the barracks. This may work depending upon where their room is.

Question: How do the cadets communicate? IM, facebook, email?

Yes to all of the above. Cadets are allowed to have facebook, use IM and email.
