Greetings. This is my first time posting a question. I've read through a lot of the threads (thank you so much who have provided some great information). This is my situation. I am a retired Chaplain. I was a direct commissionee after seminary, so I didn't go through a SA. I have a DS who is starting his junior year in high school. We live in Virginia's 11th District. I understand that my DS is eligible for a Presidential Nomination. And I also understand based upon other threads that he should seek other sources of nominations such as MOCs (Senator Warner, Senator Kaine and Representative Connolly). The question is (given how competitive NoVA is and given that the MOCs won't nominate someone who has another nomination): Will my DS get a MOC nomination from Warner, Kaine and Connolly if he is guaranteed a Presidential Nomination. Thank you in advance for your insights and wisdom.

I can not say for sure what the MOC will do once they find out that your DS has a Presidential. What I can tell you is that my DS rec his appointment to the USNA a week and a half ago with a Presidential and not a recruited athlete. Asking these questions now is great, because you DS is a Junior. My advice is to ensure his package is strong, apply for the summer program/programs of the SA/s that he is interested in attending, and sit down with his guidance counselor, English, Math and one additional teacher and discuss his plans. What he will want to do is Bring them on board with his plans and have them write his recommendations this spring. The application process becomes fast and furious late spring/early summer. Spring time is great for your recommendations, because current seniors have completed their college process and rising seniors have not started. Sometimes reaching these folks over the summer is difficult to impossible. Git er done early. A SA package can easily be completed as soon as transcripts are sent if this is done. The physical then hits the street in July, the Presidential is turned in July 1st and wam bam you have a complete package with a nom. Any specific questions assessment of creds etc you can always hit me up with a private message or on this open forum. There are many parents on this forum that can help as well as current and past SA grads. Hope this helps.

Proudofmyboy,

Much appreciated. Great info. Congrats to your DS! Great news.

Padre,

My DS was also appointed to USNA Class of 2020 a couple weeks ago on a Presidential nomination. We are from Virginia's 1st District (also in NOVA) and based on last year's service academy day with Congressman Wittman, they can and will grant a congressional nomination even if you have a Presidential assuming the candidate stacks up well enough to earn it. That said, the two senatorial staffs do talk in Virginia and duplication of senatorial nominations is unlikely. Hope that helps and good luck!

I agree with BlackKnight regarding the Presidential. However, I would say that the Senatorial staffs and the Congressional staffs all talk. It is highly unlikely to get anymore than 1 in total.

That means if somewhere along the line he plays the #1 USAFA to Sen. Warner, #1 to USNA to Sen. Kaine, and #1 to USMMA to Cong. Connolly. He could in theory only get a nomination to USNA from Kaine.

It is not uncommon for the Sens. to have 700+ applicants.

That being said, you should remember that appointments start from a geocentric aspect (Congressman/Senators), If not appointed from their slate, and the candidate is deemed competitive they will be sent to National pool. This is where many NoVA candidates get appointed. If you reside in Fairfax, you know that the majority of their HSs are ranked very high nationally. This helps from the WCS aspect because they look at the PAR, and part of that is the school profile, plus course curriculum rigor.

It is not uncommon for many to get an appointment off the slate.

JMPO, but I was always told the reason why the MoCs do not see the Presidential as a nomination from their perspective is that the Presidential is deemed non-competitive. This nomination is based purely on the fact that the parent served and that means the child is eligible. There is no limit on the slate. Presidential slates can have an unlimited amount for the 100 appointments nationally. Whereas, the MOC has a limit of no more than 10 per slate, thus that is considered competitive.

Thank you all for your information!

So based upon your information (BlackKnight89 and ProudofmyBoy), both your DSs were two of the 100 picked with Presidential Nominations to the USNA for the Class of 2020. That means that there are 98 Presidential Nominations slots left for the USNA. Those, who were not picked as the 100, will enter into a National Pool. Correct????

I think yes and no. I am a West Point FFR, so I am more familiar with what West Point does. I am assuming that USNA does the same thing.

The final charging of the nomination against an appointment happens in the Spring. So what West Point can initially appoints a candidate with any nomination. To meet the admissions goals, West Point will sometime switch nominations. So for Blacknight 89 or ProudofmyBoy DSs could be initially charged against 100 Presidential appointments, but if they have a candidate only with the Presidenital nomination that is #101, and someone appointed using Presidential nomination has another nomination, West Point will charge that candidate against the other nomination and free up a spot in the Presidential pool.

West Point's recommendation to MOCs are to nominate top 10 candidates per vacancy and don't have one nomination only policy. Nominating best qualified candidates regardless of other nomiations candidates might have will ensure only highly qualified candidates will be appointed. If a MOC has no double nomination policy, the top candidates in his or her district with other nominations (i.e. Senatorial or Presidential) will be excluded from getting the MOC nomination. So most qualified candidate in the Congressional district is likely to get a Senatorial nomination. However, the same candidate might not be competitive enough to win the Senatorial appointment. There can be only one. Sot another candidate in the district who was not good enough to get a Senatorial nomination will get the MOC nomination and win the Congressional appointment.

The thing with those who have rec appointments this early (using their Presidential). The Nom process ends. We do not interview in Oct/Nov for a congressional/senatorial nom. Had we not heard this early, we would have continued to seek other nom sources for that spreading of the wealth so to speak. Now mind you, it may be different if applying to multiple Academies. I would suppose that one would continue the interview process requesting a nom to a different Academy than one already in rec of an appointment. My son applied to USCGA also, which does not require a nom. Does this make sense?

Will an appointed candidate know if his/her nomination has been switched??? Like from a Presidential to a MOC?

DS had 3 nominations to West Point - Presidential, Senator and Representative and 2 to the Naval Academy - Presidential and Representative. He got appointments to both, but we never knew to which is was slotted. I've been told that he could look at his file at West Point (where he decided to go to) to find out which source he was charged to, which he may at some point out of curiosity.

We are in northern VA District 10, and last year my ds had Presidential nominations to WP and USAFA, and our representative's nom, as well as Sen. Kaine's nom. to USAFA. So he was triple-nominated to USAFA from a very competitive district--and he got an appointment to WP but not to USAFA. So really that's where you trust that God has closed that door for a reason. Obviously VA congressmen can and do duplicate nominations, even if it is rare--but in the end it might not matter. I would have to say my faith was tested and grew a lot last year!

Thank you for your info. This whole process (as well as raising children) is an exercise in faith. I hope your DS is enjoying his time so far at the USMA

Whoa! Impressive that he received Kaine and Warner. I thought they coordinated so kids were not double nominated. Maybe AF isn't as sought after as WP and USNA around here? Hope all is well with him!
