FYI - NROTC notifications are on the way. I'm so very thrilled for DS. He just texted me from school and said that he was awarded a 4 year NROTC scholarship to Georgia Tech - his first choice. Thanks all for all the great advice! Still lots of work to do - namely his common app! Oh, and waiting for word from USNA - but its much easier with this under his belt.

DS also got the notification for earning the NROTC 4-year scholarship today to Embry Riddle Aeronautical University. Very happy and proud of him, but it will be going to someone else since he is headed to USNA. Congrats to the other winners!

BlackKnight, is he keeping the NROTC scholarship in play in case something happens that prevents him from participating in plebe summer?

No it appears that's not allowed. In the paperwork that came with the notification it says the following:

"If you enroll in any other U.S. military officer accession program, such as a service academy prior to reporting to the NROTC unit, you automatically forfeit your NROTC scholarship. (Example: If you receive an appointment to, enroll in and drop from the U.S. Naval Academy in early summer, you cannot reclaim your NROTC scholarship -- even if you were enrolled for only one day.) "

I understand this. There are lots more applicants than scholarships and the Navy sizes the offers on the expected needs of the service for junior officers. It feels good to win, but USNA was his first choice and somebody out there is still waiting for the good news this scholarship will bring.

@BlackKnight89 - most people say he can and should accept the scholarship even if he intends to go to the USNA. If he should get injured or become otherwise unable to attend the academy, he can still use the scholarship at whatever school it's awarded to, assuming he pays deposits, etc. Call it an insurance policy. He only forfeits the scholarship upon arrival to the USNA. I'd look into it before turning down the scholarship.

If he gets injured, he still has to go through the same process to get medically cleared, he would just have about a month in a half extra to clear. I do believe that once you accept your appointment, you must give up the scholarship.

So if the injury occurs anytime prior to I-day and it prevents you from participating in I-Day/plebe summer, you could still arrive on ROTC campus later that summer with scholarship in hand, assuming you had paid deposit to the school/etc. When DD faced a similar situation a couple years ago she waited until mid-may to release the scholarship, I believe just before deposit at the ROTC institution was due. She didn't want to hold it any longer, thinking that the $$ could still be reallocated to another applicant. She was also done with HS sports by then and fully encased in bubble wrap, so she thought the risk was pretty low.

Both you and JCC123 raise a great point and we'll look into it. Just like to see as many of these high performing kids as possible get a shot. Interestingly, our older son didn't find out he was accepted to USCGA until May just prior to R-Day. Thanks!

We are at the point that Lacrosse this spring might not be worth the risk. Once soccer is done, swimming, running and lifting hopefully will be min risk. You hate to do this to their senior year, but if you are not a recruited athlete in that spring sport, the risks are scary.

I believe many NROTC scholarship winners/USNA appointees hold onto they're scholarships right up until I-day
Once your DD/DS reports to USNA the scholarship is released by the Navy. This topic comes up each year on SAF amd the conventional wisdom is to accept the scholarship AND the appointment as insurance. In the four years of being on this forum I have seen stranger things. I'd hold onto it as long as possible.

Does anyone find it odd that there have only been two acceptances reported since October 7? DS was told by his recruiter that the first board was held in late September. Any chance these were ISR's?

Remember that only a small percentage of applicants find this site. Plus there are generally fewer scholarships given by the first board as they wait for the pool of candidates to fill up. I don't find it odd at all.

I agree with nofodad.

Several years ago there was a poster that showed up on IDay and tripped off the bus before taking the oath. They only sprained their knew, but they became a medical turnback because they can only miss 8 days during BCT. I believe that is the number. The doc immediately said that they would miss more than 8 days. The poster flew back home the next day. They went to college on the NROTC scholarship their freshmen year.

Every year on here there typically is an appointee that gets injured prior to I Day. This is why everyone will say congrats on the appointment now bubble wrap that kid of yours.

I have seen everything over the course of my time here from breaking a bone playing BBall at a graduation party to being diagnosed with Mono 3 days before reporting. It happens.

I am not trying to scare you, but open your eyes to the fact that it is not just playing sports that can become an issue.

Some people will say that they think it is wrong to hold onto it and not throw it back in the pool because you are taking a scholarship away from someone else. The fact is HQ NROTC expects a certain percentage to never be activated. They know that some will go to an SA, and some will take a ROTC scholarship for another branch.

Congrats...and let the xmas tree lighting continue.
~ That is another joke around here when posters ask when they will release results. We tell them that a thread will light up like a xmas tree with multiple posts for several days.
~~ If you do not see anything by Friday than chances are you were not selected for this board. Typically, you will see a big drop and than a drip for a coupls of days.

As kinnem stated this is just the beginning. Historically the 1st few boards are low numbers awarded. Nov/Dec you will see a larger uptick. It is not uncommon at all to be told that they will reboard the candidate.

When do the second board results come out for NROTC or have they already been released?

Navy is very secretive. No one knows. In fact no one knows if the second board has ocurred, and if not when it will occur. As Pima says you'll see a thread light up when it happens. Patience.

Maybe, I should have placed in bold or caps in my long post when I said this forum will light up like a xmas tree when the result are released.

Kinnem, is correct...Patience...grasshopper.

Welcome to the reality of the military...hurry up and wait. That will not be just your life now as a candidate, nor your life as a mid, (think career fields, report dates, etc), but also when you go AD.
