Hello,

I was wondering if anyone had any statistics or insight regarding the disabled/KIA presidential nomination. I know that very few per class get in with the nomination, and I was curious about it. My Dad was in the Army for 20 years as an officer and retired with a 100% service-connected disability. In the application process, is the pool of candidates with this particular nomination separate from the rest of the presidential nom candidates? Or is this essentially just another criteria to compete with the presidential nomination pool at large? Also, if anyone knows how many people apply with this nomination source each year, that'd be very helpful information.

Thanks!

It is a separate nomination pool, and fortunately not one with very many applicants. West Point can have up to 60 cadets with this nomination, which translates that they can take 15-20 per year depending on retention and the previous years applicants. You still must meet all they same qualification standards.

So you're saying that if I am 3Q'd, I'd have a strong chance of getting an admission?

It depends on the year and how strong the other candidates are. You are best to additionally apply for your Presidential (retired), MOC's (all three), and VP noms. There are no guarantees, so if you are looking at chances, your odds only improve the more nominations you have.

Understood. I have done so already (except for VP, I thought that was a bit of a long shot), I was just wondering if the disabled/KIA presidential nomination gave me any sort of competitive advantage.

Thank you for your help.

GoArmy,
In the nomination world there is no such thing as a long shot per se. What you gain by applying to EVERY nominating source is to allow the Academy you are applying for to approve your application and then CHARGE whatever nominating source is available to you. If they want you bad enough, they will find a way to get you in (ie nomination). Think of it as admissions (Academy) and how to pay for it (Nomination). That is why you have to have both, however if you do not apply then you take that possibility off the table! Lots of time there is a lot of " horse trading" amongst the nominations sources to make sure every available slot is utilized and "someone" is going to attend. They may have a full slate at one academy and slots available at another, the reverse may be true for another nomination source so they "swap" out. This is only true for the congressional ones especially.
