Does anyone know if it is possible for a USNA class of 2013 appointee to open an account at the Navy Federal Credit Union – (USNA branch) now (before I day 2009)? This would have to be done by mail because we live in NY. The only in-person method would have to be at the USMMA branch, but that is still 40 miles away. If the account were opened at the USMMA branch, would that create an inconvenience once he was permanently in the USNA?

This would be convenient to do now because he needs a checking account for ATM access before the end of the month for a Europe trip.

Navy Federal is Navy Federal - branch does not matter. The representatives from Navy Federal attend our Plebe Picnic to help the "Plebes to be" prior to IDay - this far out from IDay I would call Navy Federal and ask. You will also get information and forms for opening an account and direct deposit with USNA's permit to report package in April.

My son has both an account with our home back - student checking and Navy Federal (recently closed Navy Federal and opened USAA - likes them better) Keeping the home bank makes it very easy for me to transfer money to him on line with no fees. If I try to transfer to Navy Federal from my back I get charged a fee and it takes about 3 days - this way it is instant.

Sorry should have clarified - The Georgia Parents Club does a picnic for our incoming plebes - Checkout your states Parents Club, they may also have the same kind of event. The Parents Clubs are administered through the USNA Alumni Association

There is a link on this page for all the club listings. Some have web sites, some just an email address or Name

I would open an account at a local bank for this purpose. Our plebe son has an account at our local bank--PLUS his NFCU account. It's easiest to use that NCFU account, obviously, for his USNA pay...but let me tell you it is not user-friendly for us outside of the NCFU system. We cannot transfer money to him, nor can he get money back out to us very easily. So the local account is when he calls and wants money (not very often at all) for something, then we can go online and move money from his savings to his checking or from our checking to his...all through the local bank.

He manages the NCFU account entirely, and his USNA pay goes there.

He traveled a good bit last summer, and used the local account entirely, as we were able to assist from home should the need arise. I wouldnt go to NFCU for that.

NFCU is opening branches at ARMY posts and Air Force Bases so they are getting much easier to work with... They opened a location here in Tacoma area.. made my life easier to deal with them for us.. but I have had an account there for years (used to work there).

In terms of providing money to your mid, you can always do it the "old-fashioned" way -- send a check and have the mid deposit it at NFCU. NFCU is great because they don't charge fees for everything the way that many banks do.

For a trip to Europe at the end of this month, I would go to a local bank. Not the time to be learning the ropes with a new or far-off system. We're lucky in our area to have a number of community banks. That's what we use for most personal (person-to-person) banking, including our kids off at school. In a pinch, we can get money into their account within minutes.

The NCFU account is for our mid's very predictable normal USNA banking.

Everyone's "2 cents" was a big help here. Over the weekend my wife took him to open a checking account to go along with his savings account in a local bank. Since he is 17 so his debit card is only capable of doing ATM withdrawals (no purchase or credit card function) - which is fine. The branch manager advised him to have his Navy paycheck direct deposited into this account so he will get a $50 bonus as an incentive. He will have to decide when the time comes.

HEy you can get the other "RED" card that works as a Visa card.. I have two Cards for NFCU.. one allows atm withdrawals and cash back from transactions (must use a PIN with that one). The other RED card works without a PIN and I can not get cash back.

My daughter has the "RED" card with her checking account, she can not get cash back from a transaction, but she uses it everywhere as a credit card, and it pulls from her sharecheck account. What makes that so great is I can log onto my account and within seconds transfer $$ to her.
