Chances of Getting into USAFA

I am currently a sophmore hoping to attend the Air Force Academy.

I am now involved in the following activities:
- Civil Air Patrol
- Cross Country
- Track
- MUN club
-Astronomy club
- Chinese Dance

I am in these classes:
- H. IS-1
- French 2
- H. US History
- H. Enlgish (we have a english and history system called humanities so i am taking honors humanities grade 10)
- H. Alg 2
- second highest orchestra in the school

I am currently working on getting my American citizenship (I currently hold a Canadian passport) and I have my green card

What are my chances of getting into USAFA and what other things can I do to prepare for admissions.

I have myopia -3.25 in each eye, does that disqualify me? will i be able to get corrective surgery if i get in?

It is a little early to talk about 'chances of admission'. Even if you were a senior in HS I would tell you that there are no guarantees that can be given by any member here.

Unfortunately I do not know the commissioning requirements when it comes to vision. A few google searches and you should be able to find these standards. Not everyone who graduates from the Academy goes on to be a pilot, so vision requirements are less strict in that regard. Corrective surgery is offered to qualified cadets who are interested in pursuing a pilot slot. I'm not sure what makes a cadet qualified for the surgery.

If you end up pursuing the Academy, I recommend NOT getting eye surgery beforehand as it could disqualify you from rated career fields (including pilot).

Have your parents naturalized? If not, by law you have to wait until you turn 18. After that CIS takes about 6-8 months to process your citizenship. You can't apply to the SA until you do get your citizenship.

I would add there is way too little info to give you any type of chance with you only starting your sophomore year.
1. Your grades in these classes matter as much as the course rigor and class rank.
~ Currently the only info provided is the rigor. Please do not reply with: I intend to pull a 4.0, every kid will say that, and few achieve it.
~ Same with class rank, so please do not reply with, I am .... You can be number 30 out of 365 this year after your freshmen year, but for whatever reason your rank could drop to 75 this year and 100 your junior year. That changes the picture.
2. Your SAT/ACT scores will also be a factor in selection.
3. Where you reside can be a major factor since some states are known to be competitive for MOC nominations.
4. Eyes can and will change for people, just as much as they don't change, especially for myopia.
~ This is why AFrpaso and everyone else will state don't mess with them. If appointed to USAFA they will pay for the surgery when you are there. If not appointed you can do it on your own dime while in AFROTC. Most reputable eye docs will not do this surgery until you are at least 18, and usually around 20 because your eyes will still continue to change until that age.

AF Mom is correct about citizenship. You must have an American citizen to attend any SA if you want to commission into the US Military. You can't even have dual citizenship as far as I know.

Our best advice is to stay on target for your goal, but also don't get tunnel vision.
Your true 1st step is going to be to compete for SLS as a junior next year. It is good to have it on your resume, but do not see it as this equates to getting an appointment.

Another step is to score high on the PSAT, fall junior year . If you are in the top 95% than you qualify as a National Merit Semi-Finalist. This looks good on your resume also.

Take both the SAT and ACT as often as you can afford starting your junior year.
~ Do not wait to take the 1st one in May, because they superscore. Try to have several done before you start your senior year.
~~Many kids only take 1 in their junior year, believing they will do multiple exams the fall of their senior yr. They quickly learn that MOCs close their nomination files end of Sept/Oct., and now they only have that June SAT/ACT score for their files.

As others will state you always need to have plan B, C, and D need to be in place because statistically only 16% receive an appointment. AFROTC scholarship is @ the same statistically. AFROTC and USAFA do not talk when it comes to selection. Their process is different. Thus, you should also at this time research that process too.

Dual citizenship is fine until the beginning of the third year. Once you make that commitment, you need to surrender your second citizenship. At least that's what my DD was told.

I should have stated that clearer. My intention was saying that for commissioning into the US military purposes you can't even have the dual citizenship, you must be American.

The reason I was saying that is because the OP, as a Canadian citizen actually could decide to attend USAFA, as a a Canadian citizen, however, they would not go ADAF for the US, but for Canada. They of course would have to go through Canada to get the appointment to USAFA which is not an easy path.
