I took my Candidate Fitness Assessment today and I think I did a satisfactory job EXCEPT for my push-up section. My scores were as follows:

Basketball throw- 65'
Pull ups- 8
Shuttle run- 8.3 seconds
Sit ups- 72
Push ups- 36
Mile run- 6:21

I play soccer and I'm very used to the running portion so I feel confident in that realm but the strength events are obviously my weakness. Do you guys think there is any way I can still be deemed competitive with these scores?

Dude definitely work on push-ups. In two weeks you can get that up easy if you are dedicated. Practice the bball throw more too. There's actually a technique to it so look up on YouTube how to do it. Not too much you can do on your mile time but definitely work on push-ups and try to get sit-ups up too. Remember there is ALWAYS room for improvement so don't settle for mediocre unless you know you have given your all. I personally wouldn't submit that because you only get one submission and if you do push-ups and sit-ups daily for two weeks, you could probably max out both. I remember my sophomore year I wanted to get to 100 push-ups in 2 minutes so I did 300 push-ups (with a few different push-up variations), chair dips and bench press for the three weeks I had over Christmas break and I was able to go from about 50-60 push-ups to 119 in two minutes. Definitely don't recommend doing this long term though cuz you end up with a freakin hunchback of notre dame muscle imbalance going on. Anyways for sit-ups, do stuff like bicycle crunches planks or anything other than sit-ups to strengthen your core. Make it a part of your daily workout with your push-ups. I also recommend doing a time trial mile 2 times a week so you can adjust to the lactic acid involved in that race distance. You could probably knock off a good 10 seconds (assuming your level of fitness is just from soccer spring based training). You shuttle is pretty impressive though so props on that! Mine was like 9 flat so it was pretty crappy.

gohssoccer14,

I would strongly advise you not to submit these scores, mainly because of the push-up component. Your mile is slightly above average and your shuttle run is quite good, but the other events could all use varying degrees of improvement, IMHO. Now, you don't need to max everything--USAFA knows that not everybody is a natural body builder--but I would definitely try to get really close to (or above) the averages in as many events as possible. Remember that the CFA is essentially "free points" on your application that you can earn just by working out consistently for a long period of time.

I am not sure when your deadline is, so I don't know just how much time you will have to practice until you need to submit your CFA. Nevertheless, I would try to get at least 70' (about the average) on BB throw, 10 pull-ups, 80 sit-ups, and, um, 55-60 push-ups. Push-ups are kind of a big thing here at USAFA, especially for incoming basic cadets, so if you do indeed end up here next year, you will be REALLY glad you worked on them. :) Of course, if you can train enough to exceed the averages, definitely do so. It pays dividends on the PFT (USAFA fitness test).

Good luck! Keep up the great effort, train hard, and don't get hurt! :thumb:

gohssoccer14: Couldn't really tell if you had these submitted to USAFA from reading your post. You asked about being competitive with "these scores". Those scores can be improved upon if they have not been submitted. If they have been submitted, no one here can really tell you where that puts you as a candidate. Hopefully you will come back and clarify: are these your numbers from a practice run or your official USAFA scores?

Badge250 my scores are from the official test that was administered by a gym teacher but I don't believe they have been submitted yet

Imo you should ask him/her to not submit your scores. 36 push-ups is 25 below average so you probably didn't pass.

I agree with frenzy. If it is a possibility, ask him/her to not submit those results and then follow the advice from others who have posted and work really hard to improve your scores. As you search threads on this subject on the forum you will find that you need to practice the CFA in a timed fashion so you get a feel for doing the events in sequence, experiencing the fatigue that can set in without much rest in between each exercise. I wish you the best !

Agree with above, do not submit, you can improve. Our ALO encourages candidates to submit only one set to USAFA.

DD CFA stats below; she has room for improvement she knows; deadline fast approaching :muscles2:

BB: 47ft
Hang: 32s
SR: 10.9
SU: 78
PU: 43
Mile: 7:55

I was really concerned about taking the CFA. I took it once at West Point's SLE and really didn't score well. I run track and cross country and play basketball, but just training a little bit over the summer boosted my scores considerably in every event. I highly recommend investing in a chin up bar for your door frame if you do not own one already.
