Upon completing my application, I was informed that I was academically and physically qualified but medically disqualified. However, today USMA notified me that I have received a waiver for my disqualifying condition. Now that I am triple qualified and have a presidential nomination, does this make it likely that I will receive an appointment? I am not getting me hopes up or counting my chickens before they hatch, just looking for an unbiased opinion. Does receiving a waiver mean anything in regards to competitiveness? Thanks!

Well, as I recall from other posts on this forum there are normally 700+ people with Presidential nominations. Of those, 100 will be selected. Seems to me you've still a long way to go. Hope your in the hunt for other nominations.

I understand, and I was not trying to imply that I will receive it. I am pursuing every possible avenue. Thanks for the input!

I contacted my MALO and he said that typically West Point has 500-600 Presidential nominations, and like kinnem said, only 100 of those can by appointed. So you still need to be in the top 100 of the Presidential pool or get a Congressional nomination and compete for that appointment.

I wouldn't say you've made it in yet, but being identified as triple qualified is definitely a big step in the right direction. A little over 2,000 are deemed 3Q'd each year, so you're definitely competitive. Now it's all about getting as many nominations as possible and securing your appointment.

Best of luck!

Congrats!! You're one step closer. What can you do, in the mean time? Re-take the ACT/SAT test in hopes of improving your score. Keep your grades up. Work on Plan B and C. In other words, continue to improve. And stay out of trouble!!

Now starts the difficult part, the waiting?

Thanks! I will definitely be doing all of those things, especially staying out of trouble ;). Waiting is difficult, but I've waited a long time already and can go a little longer....

Thank you for those statistics! They are very encouraging. It will be interesting to see what happens, but this process will have been worth it either way. It has certainly matured me and made me a more dedicated student.

tugboat, I could well be misinformed but I think the time for retaking the ACT/SAT tests are over for OP. Once the Admissions Board looks at an application and gives it an academic "Q" then that application moves to the next step (the Admissions Office in the Navy's case) and nothing more needs to be added. The Army could well do things differently, though.

I believe until the final decision, West Point allows updates to candidate files. Once a candidate is determined to be academic Q, the determination won't change, but his or her WCS can improve. Some or most Congressional districts winners are determined after the application deadline. From my understanding, an order of merit list is established for each Congressional district early on and updated, but the Admission Office won't offer appointment unless there is a significant difference in WCS between #1 candidate and #2 candidate - something like #1 candidate has 6000 and #2 candidate has 5500 and mathematically #2 candidate cannot make up the point difference. So if the WCS difference is minor, improvements in SAT/ACT score should make a difference.

I still encourage applicants to take these standardized tests. You can't be myopic on your game plan. If you don't get an appointment, you have set yourself up for Plan B and C success.

Absolutely. Nothing is ever certain. Thanks everyone for the input!

From the West Point perspective:

1) you can and should continue to update your file all the way through the file completion deadline/until you are offered an appointment (whichever comes first). That includes not just test scores, but also significant accomplishments. Elected Team Captain for a spring sport? Awarded a national level recognition? I'd really want those taken into consideration over someone who waits till the last minute to submit everything.

2) even if you have a qualification letter, it is conditional. YOU MUST SEND IN OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS FOR YOUR 7th SEMESTER BEFORE THE FILE COMPLETION DEADLINE. Your qualification or appointment can be revoked if you have poor grades on either your 7th or 8th semester transcripts, West Point doesn't receive them in time, OR derogatory information comes to the attention of West Point that you did not make them aware of and the Admissions Committee didn't have a chance to review.

Does every candidate receive a letter notifying them if they are 3Q? At what point in the process do these go out? I have been done with my applications for over two months now. I have strong academics, passed my medical, and am in good physical shape, but the only letter I have received was from DoDMERB informing me I was medically qualified for all three academies.

Not everyone gets a 3Q'd letter, its just a gee-whiz thing. The letter is not required for an appointment. Follow your portal for your information stream and instructions for the next step.

My 3Q letter says that most appointments will be given out in Feb-April. I heard they go out in "waves"... does this just mean that there are mass sending of appointment notifications, likely beginning in February? Also, I have an LOE, nomination, and as mentioned, a 3Q letter. Is there any chance of hearing earlier? I'm fairly certain the answer is no, since WP has gotten rid of the the rolling admissions process, but just double checking, since who knows with the Academies!

Yes and no. Yes, as in the recent past appointments were given in waves, three big ones. However, there were and can be appointments before the end of the year. This is all speculation based on past appointments. Yes, admissions has done away with "rolling admissions" but they still meet weekly.
