My DS just completed his NROTC application and gave all the papers to the recruiter. A week prior to this he was interviewed by the local [University] commanding officer. But he got another call yesterday from the regional recruiting office. They are asking him to set up an interview with the commanding officer for the region [he is located in a different state] via Skype at the local recruiting station.

What does this mean? Why two commanding officer interviews? Did he not do well the first time locally and now the regional commander wants to interview him?

Any thoughts from previous experience?
Thanks.

Are you sure the first interview was set up as a scholarship interview, or was this just a talk while the local university's PNS? As far as I know, all scholarship interviews are conducted through the regional recruiting office. Of course another take is that the PNS never submitted anything for his interview. There is a form that needs to be filled out with the interview information and submitted. Or finally, things crossed through the night.

I don't think is a reflection apon your son in anyway... just bureaucracy at work.

Is it possible that this second interview is for an Immediate Scholarship Reservation (ISR)? When my DS completed his app in Aug his recruiting officer called him a couple of days later to tell him he was going to be interviewing with the recruiting district commanding officer for an ISR. I believe the commanding officer for each recruiting district has 4-6 scholarships they can give out, and they will directly interview those they feel are top recruits before their applications are sent to the NROTC central office. If that interview goes well they can hand out the scholarship on the spot. DS was lucky because the district recruiting office is local so his interview was in person.

Thanks for the information. I do not think my DS is ISR. It is very possible the intial interview with the local CO did not go to the regional office in time, so the recruiter is trying to get the interview done to meet his quota, I think. Still not sure.

Hi
Thanks for your input. Apparently my DS's second interview is for ISR!!! He contacted the local CO and asked why is he being asked for a second interview and he was informed by the local CO, that it was for ISR.

Is there any thing special he needs to prepare for this ISR interview?

Thanks.

He needs to be ready to accept it and identify his first choice college. Not sure how long they have but it's not too much time.

I agree with kinnem. It could be as quick as make a decision within 4 days.

@Pima and Kinnem
Will this interview be different from his previous interview with the local CO?
Any please explain what you mean by he needs to make a decision with in a few days?
Does it mean he has to sign on the dotted line and commit?

Yes, that's what it means. Of course he's not legally obligated to attend but he would lose his scholarship. I would think that "He needs to make a decision within a few days" would be pretty straight-forward.

informe: to be clear, any scholarship midshipman can drop their scholarship and commitment at any time up to the day they step on campus during sophomore year.

Accepting the ISR fast tracks a candidate in the application process but the obligation and commitment remain the same as those who earn a scholarship via the "normal" process.

Interview is not entirely necessary. Due to busy athletic and academic schedule, DS was permitted to substitute his USNA BGO interview instead. DS received 4-yr scholarship notification shortly after that.

Congratulations to your son. I am even surprised my ds was asked for this interview. Will take it as it comes. Hope he gets it because it will be a morale booster.

Good luck with the interview. This same thing happened to the DS of a neighbor a few yrs back, he was awarded the 4-yr scholarship on the spot.
