DS's most recent ACT score did not change overall (still a 28) but his math portion improved from a 33 to a 35. Should he be sending in this new overall score to the academy or would it make any difference?

Thanks. I thought only SAT was superscored.

Not only do they superscore, they only look at math and English. With that math score, if he has even a decent English score his superscored composite will be good.

My son got his October ACT results, and improved too. Unfortunately, although he thought for sure he bumped his math score from a 32, that is the only score which didn't go up. He thought he did lousy in science, but he bumped that from a 30 to 34. It won't help him with USNA, but should with USMA and USAFA. He is slightly preferring USNA though, so he is bummed. So he has a 32 average for the others and a 31 for USNA. Still competitive. Onward and forward.

I have a mid sib who is a Junior in high school. I do not recall which portions of the ACT the Academy uses. Is it English, Reading and Writing that make up the English score? And with Math, is the Math and Science sections? Or do they look only at the Math and English sections?

USNA uses only math and English subscores from ACT. And they superscore, but only those two sections. The other academies superscore every category.

My son just got his writing section score from the October exam, and under the new ACT scoring he got a lousy score, but his other subscores, for English, science, and reading were improved. I am hoping they will take his better writing score from the older exam, and I asume they will. Can anyone confirm?

I don't think any of the Academies, and most colleges, give a hoot about the writing score. It's a non-issue so far as I know.

Thanks for the information. My DS received a 33 on both the Math and Science sections and a 30 on English. Unfortunately his Reading and Writing were not up to that level. His composite is 30. This was his first time taking. He is concerned about his scores for USNA.

For USNA he will have a relevant composite of 32 (average of the M 33 and E 30, and at least with ACT, they round the 31.5 up to 32) because only math and English count. Very nice score.

Let's not post information as facts, unless you are sure you know, as it could cause confusion for candidates/perspective candidates. USNA doesn't "re-calculate" a composite ACT score...all they look at is the English and Math...there is no re-calculation that would be the ceiling of the best (English + Math) / 2. In other words, USNA doesn't care about the composite score period.

USNA posts ACT statistics for each class. So they calculate something at least comparable to a composite. I am certainly not positive, but I imagine it uses only the math and English scores since those are the only scores it takes. Thus, whether we call it a composite, or an average, it is what it is.

Can you please post the link? I don't see that information in the last two class profiles (in fact, only SAT scores are listed).

I looked, and can not find ACT statistics in the class profile, so I stand corrected. I do know, from visiting USNA with my son, and speaking to admissions officers and staff, that they do take the ACT, and consider only math and English. Indeed, I was told they consider those scores "together equally". I used the term " composite " to describe an average of the two scores and was not corrected. Those are facts, but worth only the value anyone whishes to give, as is the case on forums like this; but you are right, I was perhaps careless in my word choice.

Regardless, the ACT math and English scores are the only scores that count, and a 33 and 30 look to be competitive scores.
