I have checked and read alot on this, but haven't received the answer I am looking for. I haven't found it in the ROTC forums, so I posted it here.

From what I have read, a commissioned officer in the Army has a slim chance of flying helos. It seems most, like 99%, of the pilots are warrant officers. The USMC offers a flight guarantee. I understand there is a written test involved and a few other things, but can this be done prior to entering college on the NROTC MC option scholorship?

What is the earliest a person can receive a flight guarantee from the USMC?

Realistically, what are the chances of a commissioned Army officer actually flying helos?

Thanks

I suggest you place this in the ROTC thread and discuss it with the det that you will be assigned to for NROTC

Warrant Officers fly helos in the Army.. I NEVER knew a Marine Warrant that flew.. they were ALL commissioned officers....

Commissioned officers and warrant officers both fly choppers in the Army.
Many USMA and ROTC commissioned officers get to branch aviation and go to flight training. I would be interested in knowing where your 99% number came from.
As a Commissioned officer advances in the career, flying time becomes less and less as one assumes other responsibilities of increasing rank. Warrant officers will fly their entire careers as flying is their job.

I am not aware that NROTC-MC guarantees aviation. Marine PLC is the only commissioning route that does so - according to the Marines.

Cut and paste below from MC PLC. Aviation can be guaranteed "if qualified". Son goes to 1st 6 weeks end of May and is undeceided between infantry and aviation.

  • No obligation to serve. You must choose to continue the program and you must request your commission upon completion of all requirements.
  • Summer training (for PLC) that will not interfere with school year.
  • No training, classes, or uniforms during the school year.
  • Choice of program option, including the guaranteed aviation and law programs (if qualified).
  • Unique and selective opportunity to serve your country and make a difference in the world.
  • Rewarding experience that results in personal growth, pride, and earned respect.
  • Opportunity to become one of a select group of military professionals.
  • Financial and Tuition Assistance available after OCS.
  • Paid as an E-5 while at OCS.
  • Competitive annual salary upon assignment to active duty.
  • Full medical coverage plus other benefits once assigned to active duty.

That is how they guarantee it. They qualify you right away - before you are commissioned. Unless you have taken tuition assistance you are under no obligation to serve.

SubSquid - nice to have you back! Best wishes to your son!

Correct most helicopter pilots in the Army are Warrant Officers, however all leadership positions are Officers. Only commissioned officers can be assigned command positions. WO's are Technical only. Nice no responsibility except for Chopper and or MX. Plus, since the war began, the Army has a shortage of Aviators. Remember, with good grades and strong FAST score you can join Warrant Officer Flight Training out of High School. Short commitment and if you get tired of WO, you can apply for OCS.

Theres also an alternative that no one really talks about it, however its your life and your career so.

The alternative I'm talking about is after you are commissioned a 2lt, calling your branch manager and telling them you want to take a pay and rank cut and go warrant. No warrant officer candidate school for you and as it was said earlier warrants do most of the flying in the army.

Want to fly helos? Fly with the best helo pilots in the U.S. Coast Guard.
