LOA to USMA

I've been reading many different posts about why candidates receive Letters of Assurances; recruitment for sports and super high test scores seem to be the two biggest reasons. I received an LOA to West Point back in September, but I'm not sure why... I actually found it after coming home from taking the ACT, so I was given an LOA before my new test results were in (even now my ACT scores are mid-range [29-math, 27-english, 28-science, 28-reading]). I also am not being recruited to play any sports at USMA. I'm not sure why I got an LOA... but I have completed all of my nomination interviews and am just praying for the best. Anybody have any thoughts?

Test scores aren't everything. Are you in an area that doesn't typically send people to USMA? What other unique stuff is on your resume?

I am not in a minority group, besides female. I have one of the most competitive districts in my state. I have done a lot of community service though, several fundraisers that I have initiated, a half marathon for charity, three years volunteering at a camp on a Native American reservation, and I attended girls state (receiving a scholarship there for leadership, attitude, and knowledge of office).

Only the RC knows for sure.

I would modify a section to "high test scores" and high class ranking. So your case could have been high class ranking + high test score (perhaps PSAT) + female.

If you have been monitoring the forum, there are a lot of discussion about what makes a district "competitive." On the surface, a Congressional district might appear very competitive (i.e. large number of applicants, several candidates getting appointment each year, many high achievers claiming to applying to SA, and etc). However since the admissions office have all the information, they usually have an idea on who are top candidates.

Don't worry about! Work hard on your goals. Keep yourself healthy and stay out of trouble. Keep those grades up and get your 7th semester documents in on time.

You're very blessed and fortunate. Maybe you got an LOA because you're humble.
