I was wondering if BGO/MOC interviewers could help me understand what happened to me during my interview. Do most know about the IB program? I had an interview this week, where I was told in my interview, that I would lose points as my transcript has 2 AP both in my sophomore year. I tried to explain to my panel about IB, as Im taking a full IB course load (with a 3.92 gpa) and I dont think they understood. Im not saying taking AP is bad, but if someone takes full IB, it SHOULD not be used against me as I dont have room for AP classes.

I know that I need a nomination from MOC/VP/Pres/ROTC, plus being 3Q just to get an appointment. I have been told that taking IB in HS will help you, not hurt you, in getting into various colleges and SA. Having my interview panel tell me that during my interview just my interview just sink as I could not recover from that. Knowing that I will not get nomination from, that particular source, only places more importance on my remaining interview with my Senator.

I have already been accepted into my various plans B-I(likely letters from Yale and Penn). It just seems to me, at this stage, anyway, that I will be going to one them. I have had my heart on going to USNA since I can remember the MIDS coming to our home(parents have been sponsoring since 1996). Again, I am asking if most BGO/MOC interviewers know about IB program?

BGOs certainly do. Who comprises a MOC board differs for each MOC. I have sat on one and I know what IB is. Sometimes the board is testing you to see how you respond to questions and a little bit I adversity. All you can say to them is that due to an IB curriculum there is not room in my schedule for AP courses and that is the norm for anyone on that path and would be happy to get them in touch with your school counselor to provide more data. It would then be for them to research if they didn't understand what IB is. Don't get down yet, you never know what the panel was thinking. If you did your best on the interview that is all you can ask for. Not all interviews go perfectly. Sometimes that is done on purpose to challenge someone and see how they respond more than anything.

So if your folks sponsor mids, I am guessing you live near USNA which is a very competitive area. I am sure in that area the Board knew what IB entails. I wonder if they were trying to "rattle" you a bit to see how you responded.

Yes, I can make it to gate 8 under 2 minute walking. If we were only a few streets up, I would be in a less competitive district. I was rattled as it threw off a bit. Ended the interview, when they said "Go Navy", and I replied "Beat Army"

DS had a similar experience with the AICE Program administered by Cambridge University. Despite excellent grades, test scores, varsity letters, Eagle scout, etc., he was told that USNA and MOCs look for AP.

I know USNA looks at both IB and AP. when I getting ready for HS, my dad took me to USNA admissions, as we were not sure how USNA looks at IB and were told they know about the program and recommended taking the hardest classes while maintaining the grades. A few of the kids I go to school with have a parent are in admissions. You can have great scores and gpa and by 3Q but without that nomination it is all for not. I think MOC's committees look more upon AP as that was what they had in HS. I wonder how they would view students coming from Phillips Exeter/Andover as they dont get traditional grades.

I feel for you.... The second guessing is so stressful. I still think they knew what IB is- and if not, I bet they checked on it after you left. ... If you have wanted USNA for so long, I'm sure your passion came through. Hang in there. Good luck in your next interview, too!

I also believe they knew what IB was and were seeing how you responded to the situation. Trust me, USNA know about schools like Andover. I had friends who went to both those schools. USNA receives a school profile with your transcripts so things like number of students who attend Ivies, Ivy like schools, 4 years, etc. When you start to look at a school breakdown like Andover, that is what makes it really stand out.
