Does your major factor into your selection for SFT if you are doing AFROTC?

Most of the information I'm getting is that only GPA, AFOQT, PFT, and your commanders evaluation of you count for whether or not you are selected for Field Training, yet Non-Technical Majors have a much lower rate of selection than a Technical Major (Around 18% compared to 68%).

Is this due to another factor, or does your major really count for selection into SFT?

You answered your own question. Tech and non tech have different selection rates. Yes your major matters in that sense (tech/nontech). In past years you could also select rated to boost your chances, however I have no idea if that still is the case this year.

On the other hand, the AFROTC subreddit has a thread concerning the 2015 selection rates for their detachment, many of which are above 80% or everyone getting selected, which doesn't make sense even if nontechnicals have a 60% selection rate. Do non-technical majors tend to not do AFROTC?

Yes, non-technical majors tend not to do AFROTC in part because of how AFROTC awards scholarships. I don't recall the exact percentage, but AFROTC awards somewhere between 75-85% of their scholarships to technical majors. (I'm sure Pima will provide the exact percentage). The percentages you mentions for selection could very well make sense you seem to be referring to two different populations.... it doesn't have to total 100% due to the populations sizes.

Kinnem is correct overall the tech scholarship rate for AFROTC is @80%.
~ AFROTC only awards 5% of all of their scholarships to type 1 or @ 50. Of that number only 5% of them go to non-tech or maybe 2-3 cadets. The same is close percentage wise for a type 2. It is the type 7 that most of the non-tech cadets earn a scholarship.

He is also right that you are doing your math incorrectly and assuming that it more like 50/50 between tech and non-tech majors, when it is a much higher tech major ratio to non-tech.

The 18% you quoted earlier was also another subset that you are not realizing, if it is the same year results I am thinking. Those were the non-tech cadets that stated they did not want to go rated. If I recall the rate was 63% for tech, but non-tech that signed for rated was @53% and overall for for that board it was 58%.
~ Not swearing those were the exact numbers, but just illustrating how the numbers can be all over the place because there are many, many pieces to the puzzle.

Just to throw another illustration into the mix, and show you why you can't just look at the numbers on face value. A couple of years back HQ offered two unique scholarships. If the cadet signed when accepting the scholarship a pledge that they would go CSO or Missileer than they were guaranteed an SFT slot, unlike the traditional HSSP. I do not recall when they offered those scholarships if they did a selection rate like HSSP (tech vs non tech), but if they didn't the % would change again. They also did this for nursing scholarships years back, nursing majors are not considered tech.

Just got word of what category EAs they will be giving out this year. Looks like they've eliminated the rated EA category. Based on your major, you will compete in the applicable category for an EA.

FY18 enrollment allocations (EAs) and FY19 advanced enrollment allocations (AEAs) in the following categories:
a. FY18 Technical EAs and FY19 Technical AEAs
b. FY18 Non-Technical EAs and FY19 Non-Technical AEAs
c. FY18 Nurse EAs and FY19 Nurse AEAs
d. FY18 Foreign Language EAs and FY19 Foreign Language AEAs

(AEAs are for 5-year program cadets)

So it will be easier to receive EA as a nontechnical than it was in previous years?

WOW if what afrotc16 said is true, then this changes everything. The Rated-EA was an EA awarded to those who indicated rated-intent and were able to board for EA's first, regardless of major. If they have done away with that, tech majors will be uniquely advantaged because they will presumably board first before non-techs.

I won't say non-tech majors are anymore disadvantaged then they were before, but if it is true there will no longer be a rated-EA board then they won't have the advantage of boarding first under that board.
