To those of you who took their CFA at SLE, how did you find the grading? Was it strict? If they didn’t count certain reps (pull-ups, sit-ups, push-ups, etc), how come?

I know that West Point put out an instructional video about the CFA, but I also know after being in the Army for over 20 years that each unit or school grades differently. At Fort Benning’s Airborne School they counted push-ups differently than Fort Campbell’s Air Assault School.

What has your experience been in terms of CFA grading?

Thank you.

Perform the exercises correctly. They have cadets watching and counting the repetitions. They spot check the pushups and situps with other candidates counting. In regards to form, they're a bit lenient on the pushup and situp. For the pushup, you can have your hands slightly more than shoulder width apart and they won't penalize. For the situp, I've seen candidates rest lying down on the ground (pretty sure proper rest form is in the up position). For pullups, they try to cut down on the kipping. It's possible to kip but the motion has to be really minuscule or else they won't count.

Roger that, thank you.

Padre101: I also served in the Army and I think I understand your question. My DS attended SLE & NASS this past summer. He practiced the CFA and was in good shape. During practice, he could knock out about 50 solid, Army standard push ups; about 70 or 80 "civilian" "oh, that's close enough" push ups and about 40 (maybe) Ranger School PT test perfect push ups. He knew the difference in the standards. He recorded 54 and 56 push ups on the CFA at SLE and NASS. So, based on a very small sample, I think the grading is more or less to the standard. I hope that helps.

Roger that. I absolutely understand what you're saying. Thank you!

"You scored a high zero!" hahahah Of course there will be the "human factor" when grading. And it will be through out your whole career. When taking the CFA during SLE, in my opinion can be very frustrating when you have a young cadet who now has a little bit of power and hell bent on some pay back when they received, when they were in the same push-up position. What is important is to put out your best effort. And he CFA at SLE is an official record. So even though you can max out but your count was not accurate you can still pass.

Push Hard, Press Forward
