My son recently received a nomination. However, the admissions page states that students who score below 580 on critical reading, normally will not be accepted. My son is 20 points below but meets criteria on others. Do they really look at the whole person or will this knock him out of the running?
 
From what I have heard, they really will examine all parts of the SAT score, and below a 580 is likely disqualifying. However, if he takes it again before January 31st, he'll be able to update his profile with the new scores (probably a good idea to take the ACT during this timeframe as well, in case the ACT scores are better). I think he may even be able to update his file with scores from tests taken after the 1/31--there is currently a discussion about this in another thread. Even if he is unable to improve on his score, it sounds like he has a good chance of receiving a Prep School slot. Good luck to you both! :thumb:

They do not call it the Whole Candidate Score for nothing!

Academic record is a huge chunk...60%
~ 580 is going to be a hit on his PAR.

I would really research the threads and try to understand there is a difference between nomination and charging. He has to win the charge against he other members on his MOC slate AND be 3 qual'd

Do you find that the prep school is worth it or is it better to attend traditional college/AFROTC?

Do you think your DS will benefit from a year of college prep?
Is he academically ready for college?
If his goal is to be an academy graduate with a career in the AF, then prep would be the way to go, if the academy give that option.

If he has the time and interest he should take the SAT again. My DS raised his critical reading score by 60 points between two takes of the SAT. The big difference was that he did many of the practice tests over a two or three week period prior the second exam. I also believe he was a bit more careful when he took the second exam. I believe you still have time for your son to register for the January 23rd exam, although you may have to pay an additional fee at this point in time. You should also make sure that USAFA admissions is willing to use January results. I suspect those will be reported in early February.

If you are offered the Prep School, I would highly recommend that you accept. Graduation from the P doesn't guarantee automatic entrance to USAFA. You will still have to reapply to both USAFA and for your nominations. My now C2C daughter passed on a full ride Navy ROTC for the Prep School and USAFA... Because it has always been her dream and goal to attend USAFA.
