I have been 3 Q'd and received a nomination for the Academy. i checked my portal and my status was updated to candidate with an asterix saying competitive candidate. Does this just mean I have been qualified for the school? Is there a difference between a deemed competitive candidate and someone who is 3Q'd and has a nomination or is it essentially the same thing?

Competitive candidate just indicates that you can pursue an appointment, and USAFA has deemed you competitive. When I applied, you had to fill out a pre-app that asked for basic ACT/SAT scores, GPA and a few other small things that determined if I was competitive or not. After I filled that out, I became a "Competitive Candidate". That should have showed up a while ago, did it?

*When you submit your application you become a "Prospect." When USAFA processes your application you become an "Applicant." Should USAFA deem you competitive and/or you receive a nomination, you will become a "Candidate." Note that you may receive a nomination and still not be deemed competitive by USAFA.

Just saw this. Makes a bit more sense but I still don't really get it. I can't imagine too many kids who receive nominations aren't competitive. I think it is fairly new as my nomination was received less than two weeks ago.

Okay, I did the USAFA app long before I could even apply for nominations, so that's how I got the competitive candidate marking. And there have been candidates who were not competitive as deemed by USAFA but still got noms. Just depends on the nom source and other factors. It seems like you're in the running for an appointment, then.

There are a surprising number of congressional districts that don't have enough applicants to fill 10 nominations. (Sadly, there are MOCs that make no nominations)

MOCS are politicians and nominating an 'unqualified' candidate means they just made a voter happy. Then the SA has to issue the bad news
