Any suggestions for the best type of all around watch for someone that is going into an Academy/ROTC/SMC? I'm looking at g shocks

Many threads on this. Try a search on "best watch" while awaiting comments.

Got DS a G Shock MS watch for Christmas, which he ok'd before I bought it (Plebes in his company only rate black watches and I didn't want to get anything that wasn't approved or would call attention to him). He got a "nice" watch - don't know the brand but it was a gift from his older cousin in the CG - as a gift before Plebe Summer, which broke during one of their training sessions. He said he needed a watch because Plebes are always checking the time and pulling out his iPhone is a hassle. Don't know if it's the best watch, but it was the right one for the money and "DS approved."

Just an FYI, you don't need to spend a lot on this watch. My son got one that was around $40 and a year later, it's still going strong.

How about a Fitbit. Some of the models have a simple digital clock. And black ones are very non descript.
Otherwise, a simple casio or timex black digital G-Shock type would be perfect.

+1 Bookreader, the G Shock I bought was $79 on-line.

I wore a Timex Expedition for decade. They are good for a year or two before stuff starts to wear out (strap breaks/face gets too scratched), but for $40 I figure that's pretty good.

I saw a decent deal on a Casio Pathfinder, so I'm trying that now. Time will tell.

In all honesty, you don't need anything more than a Timex or Casio. It's nice to have an alarm or stopwatch. Get a nice watch later in your life.

You won't do anything so hard that you need a GShock or one of those Luminex seal watches.

A fancy watch for day to day use really isn't needed. I use just some basic watch (I think it's a Timex but not really sure) I found at the store. A nicer watch for other occasions is always nice.

A fair number of cadets break their watches during basic training because the kinds of things they are doing are rough on a watch. Go simple and cheap for now and get a fancier watch later if you really still want a nicer one.

I like it. It is rugged. It will last longer than just about any other watch and it will do anything they want. Probably can even make the coffee. ;)

I am in agreement with LITS, Bull, Raimus, Bookreader and others regarding this. You simply don't need an expensive, super-duper, tactical, "kitchen sink" type of watch. A simple $25-$35 Timex or Casio will do. Practical features: light/ glow, alarm, stopwatch, water resistance.

If your going to get a watch that will be worn for everyday including training, get something with either a Mineral/Hardlex or Sapphire Crystal. The Mineral crystal is more impact resistant but the Sapphire crystal resists nearly all scratches and is still more impact resistant then a standard glass crystal.

I have to agree, a simple Timex or Casio will do the trick, but if your buying something a step up just make sure you think about the Crystal.

As an FYI, Walmart's brand of outdoor gear, Ozark Trail, carries good watches. Never had an issue with mine and they're $10. Maybe not quite the quality of a G-shock or middle-of-the-road watch but they work well and they're cheap.
