SAT Cancellations

Hello,

I am a candidate for USAFA and my SAT that was scheduled for this weekend, was just rescheduled for the end of February due to a blizzard- meaning I would not receive my scores until March. This is way too late for admissions. I have taken the SAT 4 times (this will be my 5th) and my scores are CR 570, M 550, W 580. I understand these are low and not qualifying for USAFA. I have received two nominations to USAFA (presidential and congressional) and have been deemed medically qualified (should be physically qualified as well).

I have done everything in my power to study for this test and take it as many times as possible- I truly believe I am far more prepared this time, as I found a study tool that has helped my math and critical reading skills immensely. If it weren't for this blizzard, there would be no problem. However, I am worried USAFA will not receive my scores in time for the last admissions board.

Has anyone else run into this issue before or sent scores this late?

Please let me know- I am trying to weigh my options and figure out the next best plan of action.

I think with your unique situation you probably need to speak with your ALO. You won't be the only candidate in this situation.

End of Feb. would mean mid-Mar by the time they get the results electronically.

I agree talk to your ALO, but expect the...I am sorry.

I wish you the very best, and suggest you contact your ALO or RD at USAFA today to answer this question directly.

I don't disagree with Navy Hoops that many will be in your situation, but I also believe that there has to be a drop dead date. Holding off until March SAT release impacts more than the MOC slate from a charging perspective. It impacts the national pool too. That could mean mass mailing would be April, not March.

I get it, truly I do. It stinks, but this is also why posters strongly stress have plan B in place at all times.

Nobody knows, and anyone in the know would never say that it is a possibility on a public forum like this.

Just do what you can, and have plan B in place.

Flight9, is there any way you can find transportation to a non-blizzard location to take the January 23rd SAT? You might contact College Board and ask.

My DS is facing same exact situation - almost identical. I agree that you should be proactive and make calls to ALO and Counselor. The worst they'll say is no. Just make sure you have colleges lined up (plans B and C, etc). The fact that you have two nominations gives you two chances, I believe and that's an honor in itself. Make the calls, keep pressing forward, but be mentally prepared for no. As I often tell my DS, if you are meant to be there, you will. "Our" plan is not always the best plan for "us." Good luck!

Flight9, it pains me to hear of your situation. I know you are disappointed right now but the others are spot on. Make the call and ensure your plans B, C, and D are in place. It's okay to be discouraged for a bit, but pick yourself up and press on!

For other applicants, pay attention to this thread. The OP took the SAT 4 times with similar results. If you are struggling with taking the SAT, try taking the ACT and then focus your efforts on the test that you fair better on. In fact, I would recommend taking the first available date for each and go from there. They are entirely different tests and everyone's brain works in it's own mysterious way and most people do better on one or the other. Get a tutor early, or go online (Kahn Academy) and learn the techniques that can help when taking the test. There are so many resources, but the key is to start early and be prepared for anything, even a snow storm (that happens every year BTW) on the east coast. Aim High!

If you really want to attend a service academy and truly believe that you can get those test scores up, start looking into civilian prep schools and be prepared to reapply. This is a great plan B. Gives you time to improve test scores, an extra year of maturity and will make you a much better prepared student whether you end up at a SA or go the ROTC route. By far the best thing that we/DS could have done.
NEVER GIVE UP ON YOUR GOALS!

I agree. Find the closest one that isn't cancelled and drive there. Sorry but it's a once in a lifetime chance.

I always tell kids to make all important decisions as though it's 30 years from now and you're looking back over your life, what would you wish you'd have done differently? Which decision are you most likely to have regretted?

If you do go for it and still don't get in, at least you'll know you did everything you could.

+1 Coach....
Flight9: Call the College Board, transfer the test this Saturday to the nearest non-blizzard location, and then do the planes trains automobiles thing and get there. Greyhound is cheap....even better, a fast flight to sunny florida.

Flight9, just got confirmation that our SATs were cancelled due to storm. My DS called Academy today and was told by his Counselor that he will be able to take the test on 2/20 and submit his scores after the 2/15 deadline due to the storm. I'm sure this will apply to you as well if your issue is the blizzard. Make a call yourself to confirm and then get the SAT book and start studying. Figure out the areas you need to bring up and focus on them! Keep pushing forward! Good luck!

Thank you everyone, your advice and encouragement means the world!

I called my admissions counselor and unfortunately the scores would not arrive in time with the rescheduled SAT date. However, I am now on the wait list for the ACT on February 6th. I have taken the ACT twice (highest scores - English: 25, Math 23, Reading 26, SR 26) and believe I can bump up my scores with lots of studying over the next two weeks. The scores will be released near the end of February, so I basically just have to pray they make it before the last admissions board meets.

USAFA is my dream school and if it does not work out this year, I will reapply in a heartbeat. I cannot see myself anywhere else and I am determined to get there one way or another. I've always had to be a fighter in regards to grades, tests, etc. - but I've learned to look at it from a positive point of view and it has allowed me to become much more determined and resilient.

I am praying everything works out- I am not going to let a little blizzard stop me!

Make sure you call your ALO AND USAFA so that they know you are one of those who are snowed-out of the SAT.

Don't just assume that your late scores will be accepted.

I agree with fencersmother - call and confirm.
BTW...If needed, dealing with this situation as well as everything else surrounding reapplication not only builds character but also makes great fodder for future essays and interviews.
No doubt!
