-SAT: 2040
-6 AP classes including physics and calculus.
-School does not officially rank, but my counselor said I am top 10%.
-3 years of varsity tennis
-Team captain
-Beta club officer
-National honors society
-National Spanish honors society
-Received medical waiver
-Maxed out almost every CFA event
-only a presidential nomination..

These are the basics of my profile. Am I somewhat competitive for appointment? I know the wait is tough for everyone! Any feedback or insight would be greatly appreciated.

It's really hard to tell with West Point and how competitive you are in your area, waiting list, etc. You can get a general idea of the previous classes in the discussion pinned in this forum.. It's called What are my chances? or something like that... But you sound pretty competitive! Best of luck!!

Don't hesitate to ask your interviewer about how competitive are you in the pool. I suggest you send an e-mail to your regional commander. I had a lot of interactions with the RC and West Point interviewer in regards to my application and many other questions that I had. They are here to support you and help you guide through the application process.

It's quite difficult to tell if you are competitive or not. There are so many things that West Point uses to evaluate you such as GPA, Rank, Other Extracurricular Activities, ESSAY (Important), Recommendations, Physical, Leadership, Motivation, Interview...

If I am not mistaken(please correct me if I am): Candidate Qualified Letter (Academically, Physically, and Medically) + Presidential Nomination=
Appointment. Refer to: http://www.west-point.org/academy/malo-wa/educators/noms.html

3Q + presidential nom allows them to compete for an appointment.

5Day is correct...compete, not appoint.

As tempting as it is, and as you are undoubtedly aware, no one here can "chance you". Things like "stats look good, leadership great, test score looks solid, GPA is awesome, etc." are merely observations that we funnel through our own lenses based on what we've read or seen in others. Fact is, the admission process is pretty much a mystery and beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder...who in this case is the admissions board.

Everyone wants reassurances or validation of what's been put forth particularly in a time when it's completely out of your hands and you can do no more than practice patience. I would leave you with this...look yourself in the mirror and honestly tell yourself that you have done everything you could, made every effort and left it all on the field. If you answer yes, I "chance you" A #1 and take my hat off to you for putting in the work and for your desire and hope it all comes to pass the way you want it to. I wish you the best!

Thank you! I emailed my RC.

The email to your RC won't hurt, but I can't believe you will get a response that is any better response than what you already know.
The RC is going to say Your competitive, your very competitive, some PC way of telling you that you don't have a shot. I can't imagine you will ever get, "Don't bother applying" or "you are a sure thing".

IMHO I think you are competitive to very competitive. (That and $5 will get you a Starbucks)

Let us know what your RC says.

The wait is tough. We will all know one way or another by mid April.
Good Luck

Haha I love the way you put that. I emailed him, but I'm sure he will just say what you've already said. Thank you for your input and I will post what he says.

I will respond with the forum typical.
Best of luck
Make sure u have those plan b's in place.

I think it depends on your RC. Ours was very straight-forward. He told my son from the get go that he'd make a strong re-applicant, after a year of college and ROTC under his belt. I was so mad at him...his emails seemed so curt and not at all encouraging. He was also 100% right. After the TWE arrived, my son wrote him and asked for his suggestions to make his file stronger for the next year. He went over his file with him and gave him very specific instructions (which DS followed to the letter). Later, when DS met the RC at a local information session that he'd been invited to (to meet potential candidates), he found the RC to be a really nice, genuine person. He just didn't mince words and wanted DS to do the best he could to actually have a chance at appointment. We were sad when he PCS'd to a new position...a real loss to our region. My point is that your RC will not always hand you the party line...many are going to tell you things that are hard to hear, but they know. A candidate who really wants to get into West Point would do well to listen to and follow the suggestions of his/her RC.

Strong file - but curious - did you apply for MOC noms?

My USMA interviewers told me I wouldn't need their nomination because I already had the presidential.....

Some MOCs will not give a Nom if u already have one. They want to maximize the number of candidates that have Noms. Not fair to those best qualified, but i can understand why they do it

It didn't seem fair to me because we talked for probably 30 minutes, much longer than any of the other candidates, and they told me that I was practically guaranteed an appointment from my profile..... However, now I can only compete under the presidential category. I don't think they understood the process that well but it is what it is.

Well - that is certainly their prerogative. My guess is that you are from a competitive area and they are trying to maximize noms.
You have good known stats (academics, leadership, CFA). We don't know about your SOEs and essays. Other factors - are you a female or underrepresented minority. Also, West Point would not have requested a waiver for you if you were not a competitive candidate.
You can get an appointment on just a Presidential. You only need one nom. If you don't get the appointment from the Presidential nom, then you can still get an appointment off the NWL as a an 'additional appointee' (which are chosen to fill out the class and not according to WCS).
Best wishes!

Yup. Not fair. Competing with an moc Nom is better than presidential. They probably gave there Nom to someone that was not competitive.
