How does one Reapply to USNA 2014

My son was a candidate for USNA 2013 with a MOC nomination and qualified DoDMERB. His ECA's were strong and did well on the CFA . This week he received his letter of regret.

His main weakness was the SAT's & ACT's even after taking them several times. He made the minimum scores for math and slightly below in reading. What does he need to do to reapply to USNA 2014. In the mean time he was offered a NROTC & AFROTC Scholarships. If he takes the Naval Scholarship & reapplies this fall to USNA will it adversely affect the institution where he will be attending? Will the ROTC detachment frown upon reapplying to USNA?

He plans on taking calc, chemistry, and english in college.
1. Does he still need to retake the SAT's again.
2. Will he need to interview with the MOC staff again.
3. What will USNA be looking at for a reapplying candidate.
4. Does USNA continue from the previous application or does everything
start from square one again.

I don't think so. In my BGO class was a former Prof of Nav Sci at a PAC 10 school who had his daughter leave his program to pursue USNA.

Not if they are good. They all realize that ROTC is NOT the academy.

In your child's case, absolutely! You stated that the ACT/SAT scores were the big hangup. Keep plugging. Realize that the ACT/SAT are used to predict performance in the rigorous program at USNA. Performing well in the classes you mentioned will over-ride SAT and ACT scores.

Your child will want to apply for all sources of noms, so yes. ROTC is a separate set of noms, controlled by the Prof of Nav Sci or Prof of Aero Sci at your child's school.

Performance in the courses you mentioned, if ROTC, a positive recommendation from the Prof of Nav Sci. They like persistance, so by applying again your child already has an advantage.

DoDMERB carries over as does CFA, I think. New recs will be needed. College Transcript, of course.

Well first, I am in a similar situation to your son's. I got that dreaded thin letter so here I am. I had a chat with admissions and here is what they told me. First, for my S.A.T's, (630 math and 640 reading), I do NOT need to retake them. She said i could if i want, but the scores were "actually not bad." Second, for college courses, I am going to take Calc, Chem. WITH LAB (Very important), some type of English, and U.S history. These are exactly what USNA said i should take, while maintaining an A/B average. Now, both my Senator's and my Congresswoman's review boards told me that the academies, the naval academy especially, look fondly on second year applicants. So where do we stand in applying a second year? I don't know, but if someone really wants an appointment and is sincere, i think they can get one. Take heart and go for it, second-time-arounders. Many, many of the midshipmen I knew as a BattO and now through our sponsor family did not get the nod the first time around. They did benefit from college courses per recommendations above, the opportunity to grow out of the high school environment and be more ready for the rigors of a SA and being away from home. Those who really, really want this do what it takes. I believe it makes a positive impression on Admissions.

One of my favorite memories is a mid who didn't make it in on the first try out of HS and didn't get a Foundation/prep opportunity. She overloaded on local college courses, aced them, led a major volunteer project for the community. Got in. Decided to drop out of Plebe Summer for various reasons. Went home, realized she was an idiot. Back to school, overloaded on courses, aced them, did more stuff. Reapplied, got back in. Broke leg first week of Plebe Summer, got sent home. More school, intensive therapy and rigorous exercise. Got back in, at the point her original classmates were 3 years ahead. Was able to validate many classes due to her previous college work. Rose very high in the class, was well-regarded as a leader by both peers and administration, was truly appreciative of her good fortune and went on to excel as a naval officer. Don't get B's in college get A's. Don't just join ROTC, excel at it, be their mid of the year. Make your profs know who you are and how hard your working in their classes. Go to all the office hours and all the help sessions they offer. Accomplish something this summer, hopefully centered around something your passionate about. Complete your file early this summer, college will be tough enough without it hanging over your head. One of my DS's was a reapplicant and he's now thriving as a plebe. Reapplicants do get in.
