Ship Selection Live Stream Thurs 5pm CST or 8:30pm CST

That was fun to watch. I noticed that there were a couple of Ensigns in the group. Why are there Ensigns still at USNA? Also, the red and blue tags were for something at the end called SWO Option. Anyone know what that is?

SWO Option if for things like SWO-Info Protection, SWO-oceanography, SWO-engineering duty. I think there might be a SWO- Intel now? Essentially they complete a tour as a SWO and earn their pin then move on to the other career field. They are labeled red and black to set them aside to spread load them across the fleet. Not sure about the Ensign thing. I heard that and maybe they were delayed grads and commissioned last month. That is my guess if I had to make one.

Navy Hoops got the tag thing right. There are SWO and SWO-Option, with set-asides for the option people. Everyone found out last fall if they got the Option path, designed to send them down the SWO route to sea, earn their warfare pin, at which point, they head off on their Option track.

Very cool! Would info protection be something a cyber security major might do?

We were in Annapolis last year while this was going on. Our DS was in for CVW. We dropped him off, then went out in town. Needless to say, there were many happy mids celebrating in town about the ship they selected. So different than the old days...

It is a CVW weekend right now too, so same thing. Not sure if they had libo or not, but they do have a large reception after and alcohol is served to those of age. For anyone who watched last night you saw the amount of Flag Officers, ship COs, etc there. You won't find that much brass in a room very often, especially one where they are genuinely excited, have a few drinks and enjoy the night just happy to welcome their new officers to their ships. USNA has done a great job over the years making this a huge night for SWOs. When I was at USNA we had service selection this time of year and then 1 night later we had ship selection. We were off busy picking TBS or flight school dates and couldn't go cheer on our friends at ship selection. I like they find out earlier now and have really improved how they brief Firsties on the differences of ships/ports, deployment schedules and how all these things align with personal and professional goals. It gives them so much more time to make an educated decision.

Navymom24, information professional (vice information protection) does deal with quite a bit of cyber, but also deals with a lot of infrastructure and how the bits flow (communication paths, network equipment, and network operations); information warfare (which is no longer the name of that community....new name TBD) deals a lot with cyber, including analyzing those bits, from a defensive perspective, but also work in the offensive area, and they deal with other areas of information operations. Generally more "IW" officers go for cyber security; whereas, more computer science or information technology go for information professional; however, all of them are interchangeable and relevant to the IP or "IW" communities.

The CNO (and previous CNOs) did not like the term "Information Dominance Corps," therefore it was renamed to the Information Warfare Community. Hence why the IW officers are no longer IWs.
