SLE 2016 application question?

I am a junior in Maryland right now and a class of 2021 hopeful for West Point. I saw that the SLE is rolling admissions and that they want an ACT score with the application. My ACT and SAT scores are bad and I plan to take the ACT on Feb 6. I think I will do pretty good but that means I will have to wait until March 1 to send my application. Will my chances be slimmer if I wait to take the ACT to put a good score on my application?

Someone more informed than me may correct me if I'm wrong, but seeing as the admissions IS rolling, the more that you delay in submitting your application, the slimmer your chances are. Do you have a PSAT score that you could use in place of the ACT and SAT scores?

I agree. I'm sure they hold some spots until the end but its probably not that many since they state they want you to apply early. It shows motivation etc. DS even worried about applying later for USAFA SS but he choose to wait on his PSAT scores and updated class rank. That one is not rolling admissions so in theory it should not matter but I wouldn't be surprised if they don't give some preference to those that apply early.
Certainly a tough decision, you want to put forth your best package but also it doesn't help to delay. PSAT scores would be good. Remember you might not get your ACT scores back quickly. Most do but the Sept ACT was delayed for several weeks for most testers.

My PSAT isn't that good either. Right now I'm 8th out of 318 kids but the semester just ended and I got straight A's so my class rank will get better. My gpa weighted is 4.3. My unweighted gpa is 3.9. I swim varsity and play soccer for my high school. I'm S-5 officer in my MCJROTC unit. My rank is 2nd lieutenant. I could potentially be platoon commander next week. I am part of the varsity captains club for my school. I'm in scouts finishing my eagle project and have held many leadership positions there as well. Im in the national honors society and have many service hours from there, scouts and tutoring people. I got 26 math 23 English 19 science 21 reading on my act and 610 math 490 critical reading and 470 writing on the SAT.

Does anyone know my chances of getting into SLE with those things or will the bad act and sat scores bring me down.

Don't forget SLE is recruiting tool. Standardized scores are big part of what WP may consider, but there are other factors. Are you an under-represented minority? From an under-represented Congressional district? A possible recruited athlete?

I'm a white male from Pasadena Maryland. I'm in MD district 4. I'm not a recruited athlete either.

My district is the most competitive for the USNA but I'm not sure about USMA
My understanding is that the DC area (Maryland, Virginia and DC) is competitive for all the SAs.

Nonetheless, keep trying. SLE is not the end all, be all. Focus on your nomination and appointment.

Dear maxd950729,

You
might consider reaching for the regional commander: http://www.usma.edu/admissions/sitepages/Southeast.aspx. Talk to him and ask for his opinion then study, set your goals and take the test until you attain those scores. You are doing all the right things for your extracurricular which are 30% of the overall calculation. Shoot for officer/leadership positions in the clubs and Captain of the sports teams with letters from your advisors / coaches for your file(don't wait to get these -- accumulate them as you go). Grades, test scores and class standing, (not GPA) are 60% of the game and CFA is 10%. Keep at it. Never quit.

USMA is the better choice. GO ARMY!

Why don't you send the PSAT now and then work to bring up ACT/SAT for your application?

I just spoke to a person in admissions. He said to send in the file and then update it when you get your scores. Thanks for all the help everyone.
