For the incoming Freshman do we receive Scorpion uniforms? Also will we live in the new dorms?

As a New Cadet during Beast you will be assigned to a company and live in whichever barracks that company is assigned to (they are not dorms). After Beast as a Plebe, you will scramble to a new company and live in whichever barracks that company is assigned to. Either of these times may include the oldest or the newest barracks, or something in between. After 1st semester you may scramble again - new company, new barracks, new roommates. Or you may not scramble until after Plebe year. My Yuk moved to a newly renovated barracks after Thanksgiving, and is on his 3rd set of roommates/barracks. If anything, expect change and expect it often.

I don't know what the scorpion uniform is but you will be issued a lot of uniforms and told when to wear each one.

According to a Cadet on the oh so very reliable Yik-Yak, we will be issued the new uniform as Plebes. Makes sense to me. They'll be standard issue in not too long.

I just talked to my friend who is a Plebe at USMA, and he said that while the state of what uniform C/O 2020 will wear is still to be determined (will be notified when admissions sends out the packet of information), tan boots are authorized with either camouflage pattern (current vs. scorpion) as long as the matching undershirt and belt are worn accordingly.

My DS got the authorized boot/low quarter letter in the spring '14. Purchased a pair of boots from that letter. By the time he showed up for Beast, the Army had decided that boot was no longer authorized so he was not allowed to wear them for the first few weeks of Beast. (And no notification was given to cadet candidates about the change prior to R-day.) A 2nd pair of boots was issued on R-day. Part way through Beast he was told he could wear the original boots, but only for Beast, not during the academic year. Boots aren't cheap - $140+. He wore the issued ones most of the time, and the new ones sat in his room. Expect change, and expect it often. What you are told today may not be the case in the coming months.

Hamleton - Sand boots won't be authorized by the time you are commissioned in 2020. 1 October 2019 is the mandatory possession date for the coyote brown boots and sand boots won't be authorized with the OCP then. Like ca2midwestmom indicated "Boots aren't cheap - $140+.....and the new ones sat in his room."

Your boots don't have to match your shirt or belt, that has been clarified. Also, the new uniform still goes by the name of ACU, just a new OCP pattern.

Reality is that whatever you are issued/bring you'll probably buy another pair before you leave USMA, possibly two. And another pair or two during/for your BOLC depending on branch. And if headed to RS, 2-3 more pairs. And maybe another after mountains.

All assuming typical cadet non-slug activity.

Likewise, my bet is there is a good chance that your 2nd pair issued on r-day will be sand even if you get OCP uniforms.

Just FYI: 2015 still received some BDU woodland items with their UCP ACU's, 2014 even more if I recall. There is still much UCP in the system even on the big posts.

Unless they are in a position to issue OCP to all, my bet is that even the boot letter boots will be sand.

There are already a handful of people wearing OCP and they no longer sell ACU on post. You guys may very well get ACU and OCP but don't worry about sticking out as plebes. After summer training most people will switch their torn up UCP for OCP.

There you have it, that's how much things can change in just 6-7 months.

Just recognize that some of the big Army schools are still mandating UCP, so don't toss those sand boots just yet!

DS had to buy multiple sets of UCP for one school, luckily he was able to find used as he knew they would get trashed
