Rotc and West Point

My ds recieved a 4 yr Rotc schlarship. The paperwork states that he must sign and return by Mar 18. We are waiting for word on an appointment that may or may not come in before Mar 18. Anybody else have this situation? Not sure what he should do. Thanks
 
Sign the paperwork for the AROTC scholarship. If he is offered an appt to West Point, his AROTC scholarship will be cancelled by the Army when he reports on R-Day.
 
Completely concur with gokings -- it is cheap insurance -- since most civilian universities start in mid to late Aug, that is 6 to 8 weeks of more healing from a spring/summer injury that would prevent him from reporting to R-Day at USMA in June, but would allow your DS to report for school and AROTC in Aug . . .

. . . plus IMHO your DS has earned that 4yr AROTC scholarship. He isn't keeping it from someone.

We are in the same situation.
 
I would accept scholarship, do any paperwork needed, put deposit on room/board and even go to the new students sign up for classes. Once your DD/DS finishes beast, you as parent or they can cancel and disenroll in August before the term starts. Don't inform AROTC until it's necessary. Hopefully you'll hear before that though.
 
Would this work across all branches? Ex: NROTC scholarship accepted and not AROTC
 
This just came up for us as well. My son said that signing the ROTC contract was binding and that he could not back out if he gets an appointment. Is this not the case? I have not seen the notice he received as he is away at school. Additionally, we have the problem that he has not heard back from 2 of the schools to which he was awarded the ROTC scholarship ( he was rejected from the third school) and may not hear until April 1st. Anyone else have this issue?
 
My son has the four-year ROTC scholarship and just received his appointment. We signed the paperwork for the scholarship a couple months ago. We'll put a deposit on that school and just wait it out. Our worry is that our son is VERY involved in krav maga and TKD and could get injured. He knows the risk but loves doing it and so he continues on :)

Tell him to read it again or scan it and email it to you for interpretation. If this is a national ROTC scholarship...assuming Army.... it is not binding if he subsequently gets an appointment to a Service Academy. Pick a school for which the scholarship can be used and accept it before the deadline. If his dream school is one he has not heard back from regarding acceptance he should call the Recruiting Ops Officer and discuss his chances for acceptance at the school. Most of the ROO's do have an understanding of the acceptance criteria at their school. Cross the bridge of scholarship transfer at the first point he determines it is necessary.

Thank you! I really doubted that the scholarship was binding in case of an appointment, but sometimes 18 year olds can be "obstinate"....

There is a difference between signing the ROTC scholarship offer letter and signing an ROTC contract.

When offered a national scholarship, the letter you sign and send back to US Army Cadet Command indicating your acceptance and school choice isn't the "contract." If you get a Service Academy appointment after you have signed the ROTC scholarship acceptance letter . . . no harm no foul. You report in June to the SA, and the your AROTC scholarship is cancelled.

You sign the AROTC "contract" after you report to your civilian college/university (having passed the DoDMERB medical or gotten the waiver), and having passed the APFT.

You can then actually apply for a nomination to attend USMA via your AROTC unit: http://www.usma.edu/admissions/sitepages/apply_nominations.aspx

"Applicants currently enrolled in an Army Junior or Senior Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program or an ROTC program from another branch of service that has been designated as an Honor Unit with Distinction are eligible for a nomination in this category. A request for a ROTC Nomination should be made through your Professor of Military Science or Senior Instructor who must fill out and submit a Request for ROTC Nomination (Form 5-497) to the Director of Admissions, U.S. Military Academy."

So I don't think there is an issue with accepting a SA offer while on a ROTC contract. Have him check with his PMS if he is interested in pursuing.

He is at a boarding school in 12th grade. Thank you for your advice about the ROO- I will have him get in touch with them.

Thanks! I appreciate how helpful everyone here is- have been lurking for awhile but wish I'd started posting sooner!
