Hi All,

For those of you who have sons or daughters who have received an appointment to The USMMA, Class of 2019 Parents are available to help answer questions and to help you along the way to INDOC and beyond. You can private message me for more details.

Kathy

Thank you! We are "new" parents to this. Our son is in the class of 2020. So I think the first question would be - when do the parents need to be at KP with their child? Indoc? What do we do for this - just show up and drop them off? Is there time to spend with them? After Indoc - do they come home at all of when is the first time they can come back home for a visit? Thanks in advance!

I am not a 2019 parent, but I've been down the road twice. If you are local and can make it to drop your child off at Indoc, that is great. But - if you have to make a choice between Indoc and Parents Weekend, by all means opt for Parents Weekend.

At Indoc, you will be able to stay with your child until they go into O'Hara for processing . There will be a presentation for the parents in the auditorium where you will probably hear from the Superintendent and Commandant. Parents will be able to watch as the new Plebe Candidates muster for lunch - and then you will be asked to leave. In the interim you might catch glimpses but you will not be able to talk with or spend time together.
Do try to figure out which company they have been assigned to - you can tell by the numbers written on their hands. That will be useful once you start to see the Indoc photos that will be posted.

Parents Weekend is a different story - you will have time together and they will likely be able to leave the Academy for a bit. Try to make it for the weekend as I think seeing the folks from home is a big boost to the plebes after the rigors of Indoc and start of the first trimester.

Feel free to PM if you'd like.

First - Congratulations on the Appointment!

I believe Indoc is June 28, 2016. You can show up and drop them off if you would like. You can walk around the academy grounds before he goes in for processing if you would like. You can also stick around and watch, from afar, for your DS to come running out and meet some drill instructors - they will be yelling at him and he will stand there for a bit. He will then run to his barracks and after all of the Plebe Candidates arrive the entire 2020 class will will them come back out and form up for their first meal in Delano and then you will have to leave. In the past few years the Alumni Assoc has sponsored a Mets baseball game where you as parents can purchase tickets and go to the game if you can/would like. You will be able to spend time with your DS in his dress whites. Next up is Acceptance weekend - and in my humble opinion this is a - Must See your DS will take his oath on the football field - there is only one acceptance day, but, there are multiple parents weekends. For Acceptance Weekend, this could be your DS first chance to get away from the academy and eat regular food and sleep - as hard as it will be to want to talk with them and visit with them they may want to just sleep - please let them dictate the flow of the weekend. My DS came home after the first tri-mester and he slept a lot and ate normal food.

I am hoping and trusting that there is a Class of 2020 parents facebook page that you can and will join. Parents share stories/concerns/vent/etc. Both this forum and the facebook page(s) are very helpful.

If you are going to spend the day(s) before indoc in Great Neck make your hotel reservations now - hotels fill up quickly and traffic is a pain.

If you have any questions, please feel free to PM me if you would like.

Welcome to the KP Family!

The possible Alumni Assoc sponsor of the Mets game is during Indoc time? They aren't in their whites then are they?

The mets game is during acceptance weekend. typically you do not see DD or DS until then. My DS is class of 2019... Recognition is looming ahead!!! My DS who attends Middlebury accused of stalking as our only connection was the photos from indoc... Which we combed ad infinitim asking each other is that him??? Does it look like DS head??? Hard to find when they all look alike. Yet distracting when all, you get is a 5 minute phone call on Sunday's but not until they have been there 2 weeks... That said you s their thing give them the space to do it. Go see them when parents are expected and enjoy your time with your DS or DD. FYI DS I currently with lax team atbMyrtle Beach during spring break playing 2 games and practicing.

No the game is not during indoc...sorry for the confusion...it is later. Yes they are in their dress whites (well they have been for the past few years) for the game. Plebes are typically not allowed off academy grounds in civies - will be in whites or dress blues...yes some plebes did go for the choc ice cream at the stadium and got it on their whites

3rd class midshipmen are technically not allowed off campus in civies according to the MIDN regulations.

Not sure about these days, but in my day, I seem to remember being allowed to leave wearing the Blazer. . . and slacks.. . . I remember Plebe year being pretty handy at changing clothes in the confines of train station bathrooms. . . a dodgy proposition in most towns and very, uh, interesting in places like Penn Station. . . . wasn't unusual to see sleepers in the Great Neck train station on early mornings, either. . . . not sure how many public lockers are in trains stations these days, but we made good use of them in the past. . . .

Parents - When visiting the USMMA, where do you usually stay if you are from out of town?

plebes get caught in the city wearing civies on our few liberty times by upperclassmen. having used the bathroom at penn station and seeing people literally camped out in it. sounds like a sketchy proposition. ha.

just visiting, assuming you want to get a bit of nyc tourism in on your trip. I would say bayside queens, or flushing. both are on the LIRR line to Great Neck. Flushing would be good, you would be equidistant between the academy and nyc attractions. NYC time square/midtown all the way out west on the ''7" train (nyc subway). and the LIRR into great neck. although the midtown area of nyc is over commercialized towards tourists and over hyped.

I believe Queens will be cheaper than Great Neck. If you are solely wanting to visit the academy, I would stay in Manhasset. Manhasset has cheap hotels as well as a cheap cab rid

The ALumni Assoc Mets game trip is Thursday night of parents weekend (NOT Acceptance and definitely never during Indoc). Given that parents weekend is already a 3 day weekend, my recommendation is to fly in Sept1, attend the game with your plebe that night, accompany them to classes etc Fri and Best Retreat Fri night. They will most likely be dismissed Saturday after the parade and be able to leave until Monday night (Mon instead of Sunday because of the legal holiday). The only wild cards are watch duty and restrictions. Of course it's always possible the commandant could change policies, but it is a safe bet.

Plebe watches will definitely be secured for parents weekend and probably acceptance weekend as well. No plebes will be on restriction unless they somehow get an alcohol offense between the end of indoc and parents weekend. Virtually impossible.

Plebe watches were NOT secured last year. Prior to that, they were. The question was asked at the last town hall and I thought the answer was that watches are a fact of life for a mariner and it is the responsibility of the midshipman to find someone to swap with them (someone whose parents are not coming). Sounds good but we know in practice it doesn't always work out.

Really? Upperclassmen going after plebes in the City? Geez. . . and I thought MY class was bad. . .

It is easy to take ground transportation from the airport. When our DS went on an overnight, we called ahead and arranged for pickup. Here is the info from the KP website:

Travel by AirWhenever possible, you should plan to arrive via New York's LaGuardia or John F. Kennedy (JFK) airports or MacArthur Airport on Long Island.Once you have landed, you may contact:Ollie's Airport Service (718) 229-5454Friendly Taxi Service (516) 487-8000Great Neck Taxi (516) 482-0077;or Town and Country Taxi (516) 466-0010These services are cost effective ground transportation. You should expect to pay approximately thirty dollars ($30), including gratuity, for one-way transportation between the Academy and LaGuardia airport. The cost from JFK airport is approximately forty dollars ($40). - See more at: https://www.usmma.edu/about/directions-kings-point#sthash.QGZus3lV.dpuf

Please note that the web page referenced/listed above was last updated in 2013...The cab fare from LaGuardia is more than $30.00 now...based on DS going from USMMA to LaGuardia and 4 people in a cab (not sure who they use) it was $20.00 each (includes tip) to come home this break.

Sometimes the cab companies do gouge the mids a little.

Yes, I believe it was about 50.00 each way for my son to travel between LaGuardia and the Academy. He took Friendly upon arrival and Ollie's on departure. For what it is worth, he felt Ollie's was much Friendlier than Friendly, although both did a fine job.
