I do recall someone (Luigi perhaps?) posting the date for the Mystic Seaport flag ceremony (sorry...it probably has another name, but I hope that clues you all in to what I am referring to). Of course now I cannot seem to find it. If anyone has the date, can you please post it for me? I didn't see it on the calendar on the cga site.

Many thanks.

Son popped the acceptance package into the mail this morning! It's real. It's really real. :thumb:

They don't usually announce the date for the Flag ceremony until later. But you can guess at it roughly being July 18. It's usually after the third week of swab summer. If I'm wrong, the "admiral" will correct me.

oh wow....

that is way early....I thought it was at the end of the summer. i don't know if we will make it out for that. seems a bit overkill to take two cross country trips so close together. parents weekend sounds like a better deal.

Hey, I once got banned for calling someone "Admiral" so you watch your step, Ma'am.

My guess would be the 25th of July - last year it was on July 26th and for 2011 it was on July 28th.

If the choice is either Mystic or Parent's Weekend - choose Parent's Weekend hands down. At Mystic you'll get maybe 2 hours at the Seaport before the ceremony and liberty in the afternoon from lunch until 6PM. And if your swab is in Alfa/Bravo/Charlie you probably won't get any time with them after the ceremony as they will be getting on a bus immediately and heading for the airport to go to Eagle for their week-long cruise.

At Parent's Weekend you'll get Friday night, Saturday afternoon and night, and all day Sunday to be with your swab.

Parent's Weekend for 2009 is Sept 25 - Sept 27.

Tell your swabs, no hand holding or hugging at Mystic. I didn't have that problem but I remember a classmate being "corrected" at a high volume. I also remember the good "talking to" we got when we got back to CGA....not good. Mystic was fun though.

Thanks Luigi!

Tough choices....would love to see the boy in July...his bday is the 24th, but finances may dictate that we wait. He'll be fine. We'll be a wreck.

Great info. Will just hang tight and wait. And thanks for the info on SATO. I am going to see what they can do for us, but if not we'll book our travel separate.

my advice would be that unless you live really close or can fly free, don't bother coming out to mystic. you'll have a couple of hours with your swab and it's better to just save the money and come up for parents weekend or even labour day.

Concur, Parents Weekend means more to the swabs.

Sponsor Families are invited to the Flag Ceremony, so Swabs without family and friends present are definitely still taken care of!

Thank you Objee...

You read my mind. I will rest easier knowing this little fact. :thumb:

wen do the swabs get their sposor families?

We've sponsored cadets for seven years, so I'm trying to remember how they did it last year since it seems to change almost every year. I think we found out who our sponsor cadets were (and vice versa) a couple days before the Flag Ceremony. There was a "meet/greet dinner" at Leamy Hall, but the day of the Flag Ceremony was their first liberty and chance to come out to the house.

I was lucky to live in CT so we could go to all these things. When we do, we usually "adopt" some swabs that are alone. After the flag ceremony we took a kid from Kansas with us and then when we got to the mall we found some others there alone so we invited them to join us. This happens all the time.

Good deal

Sounds like everyone will be taken care of. Phew. Son is very comfortable with new people, so he'll be fine with the situation. It's me that will be bummed out. But, we'll look forward to a nice visit in Sept.

Nice to hear Boss. Glad to know there are follks out there who will step in and befriend a swab far from home! :thumb:

mystic ceremony

We decided not to attend Mystic last year...instead came for Parents Weekend.

At Mystic it seemed every swab ended up with someone...the parents were great!. My daughter had a couple of parents try to adopt her. Mystic is usually the first time they can call home, and she said there were parents who brought extra cellphones expressly to hand out to swabs without parents and insisted they call home. She ended up going with another swabs parents, got something to eat, went to the mall....etc...

You'll find that there isn't a better bunch of parents out there! After a couple events like this we've discovered that everyone really looks out for everyone else's kid. Whether they are without parents at a ceremony, needing a ride to or from the airport, or just in need of some assistance, there always seems to be someone there to look out for them.

What we've discovered is that while at the Academy, your kid will both grow up and become independent quickly, yet there is ALWAYS someone there looking out for them. It sounds like an oxymoron, but it is not. I now know that wherever she goes there will always be someone; parent, fellow cadet, current enlisted or officer, alumni or just a friend of the academy who can and will step in to help if needed. It's a very comforting feeling as a parent.
