Hello all,

I just received an email with an invitation for CVW in April. I am very excited about this opportunity. If someone doesn't mind answering, on what criteria do they send these invitations? Also, should I bring a gift of some sort to the midshipmen I am paired with?

My son also received an invitation this afternoon. We already sent in the RSVP for the last weekend in April.
 
I also submitted the form requesting the last weekend in April. Hope he has a great time!
 
Definitely bring your plebe a treat, he/she will appreciate it greatly. I brought a Mardi Gras care package (pralines and other goodies) and my plebe loved it. As for how they pick for CVW, don't even try to figure out admissions on this one, but what I can tell you when I was there in January most were athletes or had already taken SAT/ACT and scored very high.
 
My DD went during her junior year. She was invited in the fall before she had taken ACT/SAT, but she had applied to summer stem (was not selected for that though). Don't try to figure out why you were offered a CVW, just go and have fun! Hopefully you parent(s) can also go, there is tons for them too!

Ive had 2 kids (DD & DS) go, both took a localy made milk chocolate candy called "sponge" that was a home run with both groups of plebes. Each kid stayed with 3 plebes. $15.00 tops, well worth it as a "thank you for draging me around" gift. Keep it simple and thoughtful, works great!
 
I also attended CVW as a junior, had taken my tests in Oct and I'm not an athlete, never applied to STEM and got invited in Jan before NASS app. You'll go crazy trying to find a pattern in how they send out invites!!
 
I got invited to CVW earlier this year in October (im a junior) and my test scores were nowhere close to high... Also my friend was not even invited and registered and they let her come. I feel like it is more of a if you can transport yourself to USNA then you can go
 
Do the cvw fill up quickly? My DD received email and we went on site within 2 hours and it allowed her to fill out the Google doc but it said "all weekends and waitlists are full"
But it let her submit the form and then it said - you will be notified in ten days if there is a spot. Even though the email said the cvw has no bearing on acceptance or rejection for NASS, I wonder if kids who accept cvw will not get NASS spots ? Just a total guess on my part but wondering what others thought. I have read very mixed reviews on this site about cvw. Some kids had awful experiences. My daughter wants to attend if there are still spots but my husband and I wonder if it is worth her missing an important track meet for cvw.. Lots of uncertainties
 
It may. If possible, I recommend applying for NASS first, and take CVW in the fall as a senior.

I am quoting my own post here from another thread:

For CVWs in the fall: Is there a football home game? A formal parade? A Brigade concert? 2/C Parents Weekend? Any special sport event? Will it be super crowded and affect (positively or negatively) your overall experience?

Now that I am thinking about it, I submitted the form around 7:00 PM Eastern time. Did I miss the cutoff point in terms of the amount of slots?

Definitely go to the CVW over the track meet- you will learn invaluable info- both kid and parents.
 
The criteria for the invitation is simply that the USNA has your name on file as a person interested in the Academy. It has nothing to do with your qualifications or any sort of admissions criteria.
My DD went to CVW last fall. Shockly, the Plebe she shadowed said many students who register for CVW do not show up. Not only is that rude, it's a big mistake, since the Academy can easily track a no show.
Parents, plan to attend the all day presentations and discussion panels held on Saturday. I learned a lot about the admissions process from representatives from the Academy as well as tips from other parents that have been very useful.
As others have mentioned, treats are always appreciated. Just send enough to share.
