Hello,
This is my first time posting on this forum so excuse me if I am negligent toward any particular nuance when creating new threads. I failed to get into WP class of 2020, or even receive my second step kit, due to my SAT score in math, and as an incoming freshmen to my local University I will be seeking an appointment once more, however, I am unsure on what goes on the application once a freshman in college. Will I need to take the SAT again or will good college grades in line with plebe courses suffice? I appreciate any advice given on this matter, and if there any on here who have applied from college would be willing to share their experience or advice I would be very thankful.

Could you be a little more specific in regards to your SAT scores? Many times there are ways around a small deficiency in an application. That being said, if your SAT scores as so extremely low the academy will likely not look on them favorably. Taking the SAT again and possibly an SAT prep class would likely be a step in the right direction. Continuing to gain leadership positions on sports teams and organizations are always an added plus. And, above all, make sure you to challenge yourself and keep your grades up at the university.

Put "reapplication" in the search box and some good previous discussions will come up. There were tips about the kinds of classes to take to mimic a plebe year schedule.

I'm you in a year from now. I applied to them all last year and failed. Reapplied this year to USMMA and USMA. Got my appointment to USMMA and accepted it and still haven't heard from USMA.

Anyways, I was denied due to ACT scores last year. I had the same question. To answer yours, it is critical that you retake them until you score high enough. It still gets factored in along with you college grades. I strongly suggest the ACT with writing. It's a better test in my opinion having taken both.

This year in college, I am doing Army ROTC. It helped my applications tremendously. If you're still looking at schools, I suggest choosing one where you van participate in ROTC. USMMA has been my dream school for a while so choosing my current college wasn't based on how well I liked or appreciated the school. If West point means as much to you as Kings Point means to me, choose the school based on what will help you get that appointment.

Advice: you're given a fantastic opportunity right now. You get to attend a public university and absorb the university lifestyle! It's amazing and something much different than any academy. Don't devote everyday to doing something to get you the appointment. Instead, be a college student. Enjoy this opportunity you're afforded right now. You still have to be responsible of course, but enjoy it.

Any more questions, just message me! Again, I was in your shoes a year ago and I hope you get that appointment next year!!

Liam, contact your RC and ask "what do you suggest I do to improve my chances for appointment?" After you hear back, do everything suggested and do it EARLY. If this involves another go or two at the SAT, then do it. Maybe take a prep class this summer. Then next semester, make As in classes similar to plebe classes. Do everything early. I cannot stress how important it is to do your application early. So do it early. Early, I say.

PS: I should have mentioned earlier, but my DS was a reapplicant after receiving the TWE for c/o 2018.

She is right. Have your application done in august. There's no excuse not to have it done by the time your first semester of college starts. The only thing you should be doing during the school year are your nomination interviews, that's it. The only other thing you'll need is college transcripts at 1st semester. Again, I can't stress how valuable it is to you to have all of your application material done by august, including nomination applications! You have from April to august; that's 4+ months! No excuses!

Take the standardized tests until you have perfect scores... not literally but the point is, theres always a chance you can do better. If they have specifically indicated that that's where your file is deficient, improve on it. Like you, I was not offered an appointment on my first time around. I attended an academy prep school at a university, maintained good grades, improved test scores, and now have a spot in the class of 2020.
Best of luck.

I've read many who say to submit a reapplication early. What about being able to speak to what you've done while in your first semester of college? How would you include that if your app is done before you even start? If an applicant didn't get in on his/her high school accomplishments and the SAT/ACT scores were good, the app wouldn't change much from the previous year. Advice?

Ds was a reapplicant this year and was appointed in Feb. To the best of my knowledge they don't look at reapplicants until fall semester grades are in from college. Everything else in his package was sitting on ready near the end of December when the grades got there. Definitely wait on the essay.

That makes much more sense to me.

Your application boils down to three areas - academics, leadership, and physical ability. Your essay is not graded/scored unless you have a significant weakness in English/Writing scores. Unless you previously weren't selected because you were DQ for that, there is nothing in your essay that your RC won't have seen before (you like every other reapplicant will find a way to show you've overcome adversity by reapplying). Physically, you need a gym teacher to take the CFA. Hopefully you've done that before you leave. Leadership wise you are not picking up much in the way of positions as a freshman in college comparative to what you held as a senior in HS. You will have two new college professor SOEs to complete. You better ask early because chances are your freshman professor isn't going to show up to most classes and is going to go completely off grades UNLESS they know to keep an eye on you. In the end, these scores are averaged with the 3 from HS so they won't have much of an impact unless you are or were a screwup before. The last and most important area that you have is academics. Your HS rank is set and you'll need to have your counselor confirm it again (easiest if you do it early before they focus on their senior class and getting them into college). Then there are your ACT and SATs - not easy to prep and do much better while at college, you are best to do that before you leave HS.

That leaves the one area that WP really cares about from your freshman (or subsequent) years at college that usually is the best indicator of how you will perform in a college environment which in the end is what every application is about --- your transcript. That is all that really matters on the reapplication - showing that you can excel with a difficult course load at the college level. Don't expect miracles. If you weren't close before, it can't overcome the gap of poor HS performance. But if it came down two to candidates with similar HS stats and one has good college performance, then WP is going to chose the reapplicant. Having everything else done early makes it easier on the candidate who is away from their HS where they have to get a lot of the application support AND the RC who needs to see that dedication so they know not to close out that district until your transcript arrives.

I 100% disagree. The earlier you have it done, the earlier they can review it. The only thing they have to wait on is the nomination. There is no reason, as I stated above, not to have it done by august. They can review without transcripts. They'll still need them when the time comes however. They can make a decision contingent on your grades at that semester.

I'm just telling you what worked for my son as a reapplicant who earned an appointment this year. As with everybody's advice, it's worth what you paid for it :)

That's 100% correct. They won't be evaluating reapplicants at any SA from college until that first semester transcript is in hand. The academics are at the crux of what will be looked at.
