Headed to the academy so my DS can see the USAFA since his appointment and to also visit the area for 3 days. He has reserved the appointee visit through an email invite from the academy since his offer of appointment. Any good places to eat or must sees?

We are also touring April 8th for the appointee visit for DD. Still looking for a good deal on hotel and rental car:)

Hoping our DS will get an invite for a visit. How long after receiving their appointment did they get an invite? Does anyone know if all appointees get an invite or if it is selective in some way?

You don't need an invite. Call USAFA and tell them you want to schedule an appointee visit. That's how we did it. It was nice. DS got a behind the scenes visit while we took the civilian version. They did take us down into the cadet area to see the library, classrooms, and dormitory. As for must sees, Garden of the Gods, Pikes Peak, downtown Colorado Springs are all great. And bring money for the gift shop. You'll want to buy everything.

Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods :)

Good places to eat:
1. Elephant Bar on Academy Blvd.
2. Biaggi's Ristorante on Briargate
3. Colorado Mountain Brewery on Interquest Parkway

Four days after his appointment my son received it in his e mail, it is a special tour. They shadow a cadet, attend two classes, eat lunch with all the cadets etc and the parents go off as a group with other parents for their own tour. If your DS has not received an e mail I would contact your admissions counselor and let them know. You will need a two week in advanced notice as they want the names, DOB and DL of all attending for security reasons.

Wife and DS are going to try and come in April while I stay home and watch our two teenage daughters.

To those traveling to USAFA between 4/4-4/14..PM me if You need a local contact for local info. We are USAFA sponsor family and are located directly across from Academy. Would love to help in any way!

DS and I just went about two weeks ago. We were unable to make any of the appointee dates work so we took the regular briefing and tour (which was very good and comprehensive by the way). Garden of the gods was fantastic and only minutes from the academy. I rented a little (really little) car from Hertz at the airport and it was cheap and did fine. One unexpected cool thing- we found a place called Crave Real Burger and had literally one of the best burgers of our lives and believe me, I have done extensive research in this area. I figured it would be good when I saw all the uniformed service guys going in there. I had a burger called the "sin city" and it was so good I went back the next day and had another one before we flew home. DS had a burger that was served between two grilled cheese sandwiches and it was fantastic but the next day he got the sin city.

If you have time, a quick trip to Manitou Springs......feeling adventuresome? Hike up the Manitou Incline!
