Ok...more questions.

Son will likely use SATO to book his trip to CGA. We understand that we can also use this service. How cost effective is it? I know son will be paid for, so no worries. But, do you think the fare through SATO (for dad and me) will be competitive with web fares, etc that I can get for myself online?

Thanks....I am sure more questions will follow. I know more info will be forthcoming from the academy, but this mama is tryin' to save a buck or two and book early for all of the upcoming trips.

His Travel Order Number (TONO) will be sent with a bunch of other paperwork around April 15, he can then call SATO with the number and book his flight. At that time you will know which airline and flight number he is using (paid for by the USGvt) and you can book it with them as well (paid for by YOU).

You must use SATO to book your son's ticket if you want the Coast Guard to pay for it since we no longer reimburse this expense. His ticket will be charged to his Travel Order Number when the reservation is confirmed...good luck getting anyone else to accept a TONO instead of a credit card number.

I usually do not end up booking personal travel with SATO, but I will call them first to see what they can find me. They charge $29 (service fee) if you actually book with them, so remember to add that to whatever fares they quote you. I can think of only one or two occasions in the last few years that they actually found something better than what I found myself. Your son will need to fly at the "government rate" but make sure they're looking at all types of rates (government rates are usually higher, but are fully refundable/changeable) for everyone else.

I like to Fly Southwest to Providence, RI when I go to New England... and closer to the Academy I think.

Hartford /Springfield,CT is okay, but Boston will be farther away

PVD is the best airport to fly in for CGA. Hartford is a bit harder to navigate. Two thumbs up for the nicely sized PVD, and I don't have to carry my bags through security there anymore, which is a nice change.

:) even the experts agree :)

I travel to Sturbridge, MA every October... and yeah Providence is just much nicer for in and out car driving and flying in and out.. AND I like that SWA flies in and out :) :thumb:

Is Southwest one of the carriers available for cadets through government travel? We will be flying SW and would like to be on the same flight.

Thanks.

I'd recommending asking SATO: 800-753-7286 (Option #1 then Option #4)
