Before requesting a NROTC Scholarship change of school assignment, is there a way to confirm if there is even a spot available at the new school?
Also, how long does the process take once paper work is submitted?

Generally, it is best to contact the Cadre at the college you wish to attend.

You need to contact the Freshman Advisor at the unit you are looking to change your placement to. He or she can give you details on their current scholarship loading. Once you email your official form request into Placement in Pensacola, you'll be placed on the unit's wait list, regardless of whether or not the unit is full. In late April, the Placement Office will go through the wait lists by date of request and offer spots to the students who requested them. So, it will most likely be the end of April before the process is finalized.

I contacted an NROTC officer at the school where I wanted my scholarship transferred. He was able to tell me that spots were available relatively quickly (via email). I faxed over the scholarship transfer form to NSTC today and within 2 hours, I had been transferred. I'm not sure everyone get placed on a wait list regardless of spot or not, as my situation was cleared up very quickly!

In some situations, students will be able to transfer their placement immediately. However, the standard practice at this point in the game is for students requesting transfers to be added to the wait list and then addressed in the second half of April. If you were able to get moved to your desired unit's roster and bypass the wait list, congrats. However, this isn't the standard practice. Bottom line, just contact the Freshman Advisor at the unit where you want to go, and they'll let you know the chances that Placement will or won't eventually be able to offer you a spot there.

Son wait listed at school where his marine-option NROTC scholarship was placed. He contacted the unit of school he would like to transfer scholarship to and was told they still had openings. He sent the Placement Change request yesterday but was notified today that he has been placed on the wait list for that school - an out of state public university. I am curious if anyone knows or has had experience with getting off the wait list as an out of state student. My understanding is that public universities need to keep a certain percentage of their slots available for in state students. Any advice would be appreciated.

Don't let the unit wait list thing throw you- Placement routinely uses the wait list as a holding pool for students requesting unit transfers and then addresses the requests in the second half of April after the final scholarship board is complete. Yes, a unit's total scholarship cap is divided by in-state and out-of-state slots (as well as Navy vs Marine slots). However, I would rely on whatever the individual unit is telling you. If they are letting you know that they have space and not to freak out about the wait list maneuver, then I'd accept that.

My DS didn't get into the school where he accepted his AROTC scholarship for. He called CC for information about transferring the scholarship and was told he wouldn't find out a decision until May 6; however deposits are due in by May 1. What do we do and what is the likelihood of that transfer request being accepted? He called the ROO of the school he wants to attend, but he won't be in until next week. If the transfer isn't granted, we can't afford to send him to that school, would he have a good chance of receiving a scholarship again next year?

Thank you for your help, we are very nervous about this situation.

@clarksonarmy is the expert in this subject for the Army. Talk to the schools, though. I'm requesting a transfer from Cal Poly to RPI and both schools have given me an extension date to May 6th to accept/decline. Also, you can pay the deposit to both schools, but you are not required to attend ether. The deposit only reserves your place in the class, I believe.

Why would you be considering RPI over Cal Poly? I am a RPI grad, and it is a very fine engineering school, but it is no MIT or Cal Poly. If it is an option, for me, Cal Poly is a no brainer.

There's a few reasons. There's a lot of factors in picking a school. First, not sure when you graduated, but in every ranking I've seen, RPI and Cal Poly are separated by 3 or 4 spots, don't think they're too far apart as you stated. Second, when looking at my specific major, biomed eng, RPI has one of the most respected programs in the nation, only behind a few institutes such as John Hopkins. Third is weather. I know I may sound crazy when I say I prefer the cold and would love to exolore winter sports, something I cannot do at Cal poly. Tradition has some to do with it, as I will be attendingone with one of my best friends. The most important is finances. RPI offers 12.5k a year for room and board, Poly does not give any. If all else was equal, which it is not, finances would be a decision maker. It's just icing on the cake.
