My DS met the rowing coach on a campus visit in August. Since then, throughout the fall and spring, he has sent updates periodically regarding his current times, etc. He has never received any response to those emails. He received an appointment offer in February (which we are all very grateful for). He sent the coach an email a week or so ago saying that he wanted to touch base and confirm that if he accepts the appointment he will be able to have a spot on the team. He very much wants to row in college, and he might choose a different school option if he is not able to row at KP, so he wants to hear back and have that confirmed before he accepts. The coach again did not respond. Does anyone know the coach and have any insight about what might be going on in this situation, or suggestions about what DS should do next?

My DD is being recruited for volleyball. She was also being recruited by West Point and was an alternate to the second national team (Olympic). Even with that, and being the "top recruit/impact player," she was told EVERY SPORT HAS A TRY OUT. You are not guaranteed a spot. Presumably, if you were being recruited for a sport you will get it. But remember, you are not signing a commitment to play, and they are not signing a commitment to have you play. You can be "recruited" for a team, show up, and decide you want to do sailing. That won't happen with my daughter because she lives for volleyball, but it has happened.

I guarantee that he will be able to row at KP. 100% no doubt in my military mind he'll make the team. To fill an 8 it usually comes down to bringing in novice rowers. That said there were two great rowers in my class that had a great time at KP.

Send me a PM and I'll get you some better contact info. If he accepts his appointment he'll be able to row. No doubt about it.

Yes, I know the coach. I also know several people who row crew. There is no competition for a spot on the rowing team. The team is almost entirely plebes (freshmen), and the only plebe with prior rowing experience quit. So literally, every person is a novice. With rowing experience he'll be able to row for sure. Not responding to e-mails is very common at KP, throughout many departments. Not just limited to that one coach.

Warning issued to poster.
It sounds like he is more focused on a specific sports team then in the real reason one attends an SA.
Pontificating responses like this serve no purpose. Either answer his question or shut your pie hole.
