Other Fees?

I'm a little confused on what the 4 year AROTC Scholarship pays for and what it does not. Obviously, it pays for the entire tuition, as well as does NOT pay for room and board. But what of the other fees such as the auxillary fee, books, and specifically the quartermaster charge? i have received a grant for about $6,000 for the first year and the VMI Foundation grant for $1,000. I am trying to figure out how much is left for my to pay myself with the AROTC Scholarship and the financial aid.

Your best bet is to contact VMI's financial aid office. They're quick to respond and very helpful. Glad to see you'll be at VMI next year!

You would be responsible for anything falling under room and board, which would include the quartermaster fee. Last year I believe the total for this area was $15,000ish. The scholarship will pay the tuition and give you book money.

I could pull DS paperwork later for exact amount from this year.

4 yr scholarship covers tuition, and ALL fees + $600 per semester for books ( find used or rent them.. DS does this and saves the unused $$$) + stipend. All of DS uniforms and equipment are provided. Not sure how the SMC's work. The only AROTC necessary out of pocket expenses are haircut, running shoes and the occasional gas money for his car to get to some trainings which equates to probably $20 per month.

After 3 years I still marvel at the fact that my DS will graduate next year with a BS ( and well on his way to a masters) from a highly regarded business program , have more money in savings than most Americans and have a shot at a 4 year job that pays very well factoring in the benefits. ROTC is a fantastic opportunity for those willing to put service over self.

The scholarship will pay for Tuition, Books ($600.00 per semester) and class fees. All the books and materials for ROTC will be covered by ROTC. You will receive a $300.00 monthly stipend for your school year.

My DS also won an AFROTC and AROTC scholarship to VMI. It is our understanding after speaking with their finance office that the scholarship will not cover the additional fees (athletic, medical, and facilities/activites: $5242) nor does it cover the quartermaster fee($3158). VMI will pay $1000 to scholarship earners to help defray the room/board.

I just got an update from VMI Finance saying they no longer provide the $1000 stipend to new acholarship earners.

I have something for $500 a semster in my financial aid awards, guess it is something different.

Probably the $1,000 towards room and board that VMI gives ROTC scholarship cadets.
