Hello,

I have been awarded a 3 year AD scholarship to Virginia Tech. I have already accepted the ROTC scholarship and taken the DoDMERB exams. My status on DoDmets is currently complete-hold. I have also been accepted to Virginia Tech. When should I accept VT's offer of admission? Should I wait until I am qualified from DoDMERB ?I don’t think I have any disqualifying conditions. I have had wisdom teeth and tonsils surgery, and wear soft contact lenses.

If you can attend VT without the scholarship, and plan to do so, then you could accept now. Otherwise you should wait as long as possible to make sure you are qualified otherwise you'll be spending more $$$ than you might be able to afford. Congratulations on the scholarship and your acceptance. Some of my best friends were in the Corps a very long time ago. Go Hokies!

If it has been a while since you had your DoDMERB exam, you may want to give them a call to see what the "hold" is. Sometimes the papers do not come through properly from the examining Dr or the Dr has not sent them. That happened to my DS - a few pages did not fax through so they were missing them. We called and had the Dr re-fax them.

My DS had the same status. I called Concorde and they said it was due to the doctor that did his exam did not send all the required information. She called the doctor herself to get what she needed. The lady I spoke with was very nice and helpful. If I were you I would give them a call and see what the issue is.

Okay that's what I was thinking because I am an out of state student. Thanks! I have another question, I was admitted into VT but not the College of Engineering. Will this affect my ROTC scholarship at all? @kinnem

I had my medical exam on March 14th. I read somewhere that complete-hold just means they're waiting to send the docs to DoDMERB after 10 days have passed since my med exam. I will definitely call after March 24th.

If this is AROTC I wouldn't think so. Contact the cadre at VT to ascertain for certain. They would need to be informed of a change in major anyway even when it doesn't matter.

If this as AFROTC or NROTC on the other hand it might very well impact your scholarship. Again, contact the cadre. Perhaps you could try again got the COllege of Engineering later in freshman year or beginning of sophomore year. They would know.

My second choice is business and I'm thinking that I am going to reapply to the College of Engineering after my freshmen year. I have already emailed the cadre and I will let you know what they say. Thanks for your help!

Speaking in generalities, but it is usually acceptable to move from a tier 1 major to a tier 2 major. Moving down to a tier 3 major is not as easy. And this if from talking to some of the NROTC units. And it was in reference to changing after they had already started. So contact the VT unit. But, any major change does require paperwork.

Is it possible at VT to transfer into engineering later?

Yes. You can reapply to the college of engineering but they only take 250 internal transfers.

When my son asked about switching from Mechanical to Civil Engineering they ok'd but said "no engineering, no scholarship" wasn't an issue because he wanted engineering. He had been going back and forth between ME & CE. Had applied to some schools as ME & some as CE. Where he accepted he had applied as ME.

It may be an issue for you.

@kinnem @turtlerunnernc I just received an email from the VT Cadre this morning. The woman called cadet command and cc said that I AM allowed to keep and use my scholarship even though I didn't get accepted into the engineering program. She said that changing major won't affect my scholarship at all and that she'll enter my actualmajor when I arrive in August!

I just checked on dodmets and my status has changed to complete. What happens now? do I just wait for a qualification letter from DoDMERB?

just checked dodmets status AGAIN. It says that all basic docs were received by DoDMERB!

Yes, just wait. Next step would be qualified, remedial, DQ. Lets hope for qualified. Portal change would then be followed by a letter. Letter will take about a week after the portal change.

My son is in a very similar situation with Virginia Tech. He was accepted but only for university studies not engineering. He was planning on doing College Programer route there for NROTC. Just so I'm not confused are the admins at VTech going to list you as Engineering or Business when you arrive in August? We get instate tuition there so it's affordable for us while he is waiting and hoping for a scholarship. The big deal is not being accepted into the engineering program. Dodmerb took a little while for our son but I am hopeful you will have it all squared away soon. This process can be so stressful!

My son has been accepted into VT in the engineering program, but he is still waiting on NROTC (Marine Option) and USNA results. He is still in the running for both. With the price of out of state tuition, he needs the scholarship to attend. Hopefully we will know his direction soon. Agree, very stressful!

just checked my status on dodmerb and i AM QUALIFIED

Great news, sounds like you have all the boxes checked. If you are positive VT is where you want to go then it sounds like it's time to accept admission.

Congratulations.
