When to start looking for congressional nominations?

Hello everyone,

I couldn't think of a better placer than here to ask my semi-ignorant question: when should an applicant start applying for congressional nominations? I've done my fair share of research, and nowhere I found a clear cut date when I could start applying for them. Most of the dates I found were ambiguous: March/April ~ November.

Is it too late to start applying for nominations or am I just acting deliriously?

What grade are you in? Each MOC has their own procedures for applying for a NOM. I suggest you start by going to your two Senators and your Congressman's websites and find out what their requirements are. They should have dates and deadlines there.

Yep, it should be on your MOC's website. Most apps open in April or May. If it doesn't say on the website, you can try calling your MOC/senator's office and asking. Remember, you can start the nomination application before you are promoted to candidate by USAFA.
 
The application opening date is MOC dependent. When my son applied, the representative had a different date than the senators. If their website is not yet updated for the upcoming application cycle, you can call the office and ask them the time frame they expect it to open. Good luck!
 
Definitely go visit each MOC'/Senator's website and read up on the Nomination process/application even though the coming year nomination application is not opened yet. One or all may ask for letters of recommendation from two teachers (my DS were Physics and English) and/or "rating" form where the teacher(s) will rate the student's attributes and characteristics. This means that you will at least know who the teachers to have a "good" relationship with. My DS didn't have a "good" rapport with his Physics teacher and our district MOC didn't nominate my DS but the Senator did (who didn't require the "rating" form). (During our MOC visit, we inadvertently saw the form displayed while the secretary browsed through my DS's file in front of us.)

Lastly, ask the teachers and any other recommendation source early in the process. Some source is quick and some is not.

Just wanted to point out, there is wisdom in waiting to submit your application. Most MOCs/Senators will want your completed 11th grade transcript, which won't be ready for another month or two. Plus if you have summer activities that could pad your resume, you will want to add those on. Not saying don't start working on it! - just make sure you're not short-changing yourself. If they have an essay, that will take time to think about and write, as well as recommendation letters. My $.02 worth of advice.
 
1+ goforspaatz. There is no advantage to turning your NOM application in early. But what is very helpful is getting those LORS going early; before the end of the school year as those teachers will know you best. If you have people outside of school, hit them up now so you can be ready to go in the Fall or whenever the deadline is. Some MOC have deadlines as early as September. Pay attention to them.
 
My personal advice would be to call your MOC literally tomorrow or within the next few days and just get an questions wrinkled out. My MOC didn't open his application to September, and I must've called at least 7-8 times before asking questions and when they would open the app. A good thing also to do would be to ask what recommendations they want from specific teachers or such so even if the application doesn't open till the fall, you can start rounding up those Rec letters before summer comes along and have an advantage. It'll make your life less stressful when the real applications come along (SA's, Plan B schools, AFROTC, FAFSA, Scholarships)
