Can someone tell me the process involved with the scholarships.

I have filed an application, I got a letter saying I was a finalist. I'm arranging a interview with a PMS. After that what happens? From reading the forums there appears to be boards to review, when do those happen? Since I am considered a finalist what does that really mean?

Being a finalist means that you have met the preliminary qualifications and are qualified to interview for a scholarship offer.

Initially, before you go to your interview, you'll take a PT test to take with you to your interview. Then at the interview, The officer will ask you a couple of pretty standardized interview questions (What can you do for the Army, What do you want to do in the army, etc.) It's really not a hard thing to do, and like what some other of the posts have said regarding the interview, just be yourself, remember your formalities, and you shouldn't have a problem.

Here's a tip that I learned in my process too: It's pretty common sense when you think about it, but interview at the school you're planning on getting the scholarship at. In your letter, it gives you a couple of schools in your proximity that you can interview at, but it's best to go to the school you've applied for. (Being accepted before hand is key in the process, is what the PMS told me)

Your interview will then be sent to a national review board that takes in all applications and meets about once a month to review them and make a decision as to whether or not you get an offer. For me, it was about 3 weeks after the board met that I received the offer in the mail, and also you can follow it with the online application tracker.

That's pretty much the jist of it, Good luck with it!!

They just started on the 9th. You have to have everything in to "sit" for the board. They are probably finishing up now or soon.

One of the schools you applied to might call you to congratulate you if you get a scholarship, since they find out before you do.

Has anyone heard anything from the Army boards? WIll they tell me if they are reviewing my application? My POC said everything is complete.

Best thing you can do is just keep watch on the Application Tracker, Mine changed from "You have been selected for an interview" to "You can check your DoDMERB medical status" then to "You have been offered a scholarship..."

It usually takes about 2-3 weeks after the board meets to post their results, especially if it's a large board like last months.

My son's status on Army ROTC website never changed, nor

did he interview at a school he even applied to, and he did receive a 4 year scholarship which he will use at the Citadel unless he is accepted to the Coast Guard Academy.

The ROTC scholarship process was very, very easy.

Fill out your paperwork, send in your transcripts, get your PE test, get your medical exam, go to your interview...

His interviewer at Augusta State University was exceedingly encouraging and helpful even though my son was not considering ASU at all.

Good luck!

The Army was very efficient with the process. My son found out in October, a few weeks after the September board. From talking to a few people who would know, the Army is really, really short on junior officers, plus they have the most money, which allows more scholarships.

Do you know how long they offer scholarships?

Is there just one more board or two? (April and May)

I'm a bit confused. It seems that alot of people were offered multiple scholarships like AFROTC NROTC and AROTC, plus waiting on the acadamies. Is there a timeframe for accepting the scholarships? Will they continue offering scholarships until their quotas are accepted? I guess I am wondering how late people hear that they got a scholarship.

The last board for the Army meets in April from what I have read on other posts. As far as timeframe to accept, once you receive your written offer in the mail, you have 30 days to accept and commit your scholarship to one school on the list of options they give you. Since you are going on a late board, you would have the advantage of also knowing what schools you have been accepted to already. Scholarship awardees early in the process had to select their college without knowing if they would be accepted yet.

I imagine they have a quota, but they probably fill that in the last board as all applications that were not previously selected throughout the selection process are continually rolled over to the next board. After that, I don't believe any more scholarships would be offered for the 2009-2010 school year. However, there may be scholarships available through your cadre once you get to campus with your ROTC unit if you did not receive one ahead of time. There are 3 1/2 year scholarships, too.

Thank you for the information.

I interviewed at my college of choice which I was accepted to back in Dec. My PMS was optimistic so I am hopeful.

Yes, many are offered multiple scholarships. Logically thinking, a person would think that would free up some scholarships from academy appointments and people declining their scholarships. I know a person who got a Navy scholarship in August, about two weeks before school started. I guess it happens-they have a quota they fill. The only one I have heard is different is the Navy- Marine Corps Option. From a person who would know, I was told that the Marine Corps has their boards, selects their "qualified applicants" and if the scholarships get declined they do not get reassigned; they simply do not get used. I have no reason not to believe this, but who knows for sure.

My son has Army and Navy-Marine Option, so one of them isn't going to get used for sure.

Good luck

I too read that the NROTC Marine Corps option scholarship were not rolled over if declined by a Candidate.

My son received an AROTC scholarship (back in November) to all of his top 5 schools, and the NROTC Marine Corps option scholarship (last "late" boards, a few weeks ago) to his top three schools. He had visited The Citadel, and was subsequently offered an appointment to USMAPS, he took the USMAPS offer. It was with a heavy heart because The Citadel folks were fantastic as were the AROTC people. Top notch and hands down by far, the easiest people to work with over the course of this application process.

I've read that Service Academy scholarships are offered up till almost the last day before "I" or "R" Day so don't give up hope and on the same token, don't burn any bridges.
