Dear Enlisted Members,

I am currently a Cadet at the USAFA. I was prior enlisted for three years. April is usually the month when majority of you will receive an appointment to either the Academy or the prep school. This is an exciting time for all of us. I am looking forward to meeting with y'all in August.

So far, my experience at the Academy has been tough, but rewarding. BCT is similar to BMT, but more physically challenging. The altitude will dry you out. BCT is also challenging because you guys already been through BMT, and have to deal with it for the second time. Avoid that mentality. Look at as an opportunity for you to help the high schoolers and people who have no idea what's going on. Remember the time when you were going through BMT? There was always that one guy who screwed up. It happens at the Academy as well. Academy is full of smart people, but some of them lack common sense, which is much needed in basic training situations. Encourage them and lift them up. Do not discourage them...

You're going to have to follow a lot of unfamiliar rules. Some of us had the hardest time in Lackland and tech school following "dumb" rules. Let me tell you right now, it's going to be 10 times worse here. Don't have a mentality of "why do I have to follow these rules? They don't do that in the Active Duty Air Force!". Well, that's the mentality I had and it came to bite me. Just follow the rules and have a positive attitude. Once you get graduate from basic, you're a Cadet, not an enlisted member. Do not take an advantage of the fact that you're a prior, but use the leadership skills and experience that you had in the Air Force to lead others, and eventually change the Cadet Wing for the better.

Academics is tough, but not if you get the help you need. If you don't understand something, dont wait! Make an appointment with your instructors to get the help you need. It'll serve you well. Majority of you probably have been away from school for 2 to 3 years. Some of these subjects are difficult. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

If you have additional questions, let me know. For the direct appointees, once you find out your squadron and flight, let me know. I'll find you after you graduate from BCT and talk to you in person. I'll give you tips and help you need throughout your Doolie year. For those of you who are reading this that are not prior service, I ask that you do that same. Message me. I will find you and talk to you. Don't be afraid of me. I am here to help. That's what leaders do.

Bonne Chance!

Good job, Airman/Cadet! I see the leader in you - you do not have the "it's not my job" mentality!
