AFROTC Pilot Slot 2017 - Am I competitive?

Hey all,

Just wondering if anyone had 2 cents to give about my scores...

GPA: 3.1, Math major
PCSM: 52 - 11 flight hours, can't afford anymore
PFA: 97.5
RSS: Probably Top-Third. Possibly Upper-Middle
FT Ranking: DG

I think my PCSM is slightly low, but maybe my FT ranking will make up for that? I know quite a few cadets that have had PCSM's in the 30's who have gotten pilot slots.

I got a 57 something on the AFOQT pilot portion. Is it worth taking again?

Thanks!

Honestly your RSS & FT rank make up for everything else. PFA isn't too bad either. PCSM & GPA are a bit on the low side, have you considered getting flight hours?

EDIT:
To add to that, based on previous years stats, you seem fine. Wouldn't hurt though to get some hours, and I'm not sure how retaking the AFOQT would effect things after you take you TBAS, so I'll leave that to someone more insightful.

I have 11 hours and the next bracket up would be 20 hours which will bump me to a PCSM of 57. I have already decided that 9 more hours is too expensive for my budget.

Going to give you my opinion...

First imo, your RSS and FT rank do NOT make up for points lost on the AFOQT and PCSM, not even close. Why? Because FT points are minimal and your RSS you have no idea what your RSS rank actually is, so I would strongly advise you to not "count" those points.

Second, your GPA is average/low and your PCSM + AFOQT (pilot) is low. You asked if you are competitive not if you will squeak by.

I would recommend you retake the AFOQT and study, clearly there is a large portion for improvement. You have to remember you tested vs both people who want and don't want pilot and ranked in the 50ish percentile. You also may want to consider redoing the TBAS while you are at it. The PCSM "jumps" for flight hours seem low to me, meaning you are hurting in other areas.

Consider this: Is your year going to be handouts or competitive? There really is no way to know so I would prepare for the worst.

What were your entire AFOQT scores? Is it risky to retake? You don't want to fail any portion if you retake.

Also take easier classes if you can to boost your GPA before the boards.

True that!

The fact is that the UPT pipeline has been running at max level, thus it comes down to how many are applying and how many slots available.
