I will be at Ft. Benning next week for DS #1 graduation from Boot Camp. (DS #2 is at USAFA) Any suggestions on places to see and things to do during the day pass my DS gets? I think he is limited to the immediate area.

I'm heading to Ft. Benning tomorrow the watch DS#1 compete in the Best Ranger Competition. Things to do by base during the day pass... from past Benning graduations, go to the National Infantry Museum, take him to Commando Depot shopping and there is always the National civil War Museum (forget if that fits in the radius requirement). If I remember right at DS#3 graduation from OSUT at Ft Benning, we spent the most time back at our hotel with him either swimming or napping.

Congrats and beat of luck for your son in the competition!

If on post its also worth at least a drive by Eubanks field and Airborne walk. Time it before late afternoon and you may see the trainees in action. Jump towers, etc. A loop through the main drags (Dixie? 8th division road? Lumpkin?) Is also neat.

If at the museum make sure and hit the static armor displays and the remembrance park.

Commandos and Ranger Joe's are worth a stop for sure. Commandos is interesting, more catering to the resupply/ prep for various schools. And occasionally you'll see all the young enlisted trying on their new maroon and sand berets. Joe's has better swag in case you need that charm or sticker.
 
Four Winds, 464 Ga Hwy 26 Cusseta, GA 31805 - Home of the Ranger Burger (very big). Hindsight, probably not the best hamburger I ever ate, but a restaurant frequented by Ranger school cadre and Ranger school graduates.
 
If you need a place for breakfast, I highly recommend Plucked Up in downtown Columbus. Order the French toast biscuits.
 
Great Mexican taquira hidden in the back of a Mexican grocery just outside of the Northwest gate. Best Mexican food I've ever had. (Real Mexican, not tex-mex, Cali-mex, corporate-mex)

If interested I'll dig out a street address, it's not obvious.

LOL... I was just at Four Winds yesterday for lunch with my wife, son, daughter in-law and the 10th Mountain Team members before leaving to return home. It's the atmosphere there I agree! Also, went to the Cannon Micro Brewery Restaurant downtown Columbus ( a must every-time we go to Ft. Benning) & the Black Cow (newer place) in Downtown as well. Finally stayed at the Hampton by the N.I.M. for the first time (usually stay at the Hyatt Place in N. Columbus area) , what a great hotel & staff. Also, as a side bonus General Grange was staying there as well, what a great interesting man to get to meet! As for the son's team (#14), at the beginning of day 2, only the top 24 out of 51 teams progress .... his team was unfortunately #25 at this point. All in all a great experience for all and I know that it will be on his radar for next year.
 
Thank you for all the suggestions. We had a great weekend. In case anyone else pulls this post up at some later date, I wanted to give a recap. We did go to Four Winds - my son and his buddy loved it. The Ranger burger is 1 lb! Kind of in the middle of nowhere, but it could just be that we had wandered aimlessly around Ft. Benning for an hour before turning on the GPS to take us to Four Winds. Also went to Minnie's Uptown Restaurant on Sunday. NOTHING else was open for brunch but it was great! Definitely a dive, but good food - served cafeteria style, really tasty. We walked around the downtown Columbus area on the river, went to the National Infantry Museum and went to the Naval Civil War museum. Best part was finally being able to visit with my DS. Looks like he will be heading to Ft. Wainwright, Alaska next so I will have to get info on that!
